Dear Spelunker: I did it for 5 years +. Garbage to all of you who are ignorant and try to scare off people who want to work in China. Most of the people who write about prison and deportation are Z visa holders who want to keep the lucrative private tutoring to themselves, and of course they violate both their visas and their school rules in teaching under the table to private students. But they are oh so superior to those who teach private students or anywhere on business visas. The risk of being put in prison or deported as a result of teaching on a business visa is so low as to be laughable.

I have a recruiter on my skype who offers jobs on tourist and business visas.
He offered me a job in Beijing on a tourist visa before i got my current job.
I even interviewed with the school and it was 16k rmb plus free accommodation. I'd work on a business visa as I'm legally doing business then but not a tourist one. Can you get a biz visa in korea or only in hk?

The job offer has long expired and I am working in Korea on a proper visa. I think we are ok though as the CEO has a manufacturing business which is going really well so he is probably subsidising the hagwon at the moment with this other business or so we think. we don't mind though as we are getting paid and we are teaching 1-4 students 22 hours a week. So I might not need to fly to china at the moment. I worked in Saudi on a business visa once so I thought a business visa in china would be ok too. I would definitely not fly all the way home and back again for a Z visa especially if it takes 3 months to get. Medicals in the UK are extortionate for visas as well so unless everything is reimbursed plus flights and as soon as you get there, it#s a no no for me. I would have though there would be a lot of teachers on here on various visas not just the Z visa as someone posted they would be. Anyway I think we are ok at the moment now. Plus unless you can make more than 3000 USD in china it wouldn't be worth transferring anyway. How much can you make there? $5000 a month maybe including privates?

Cost of living is rapidly rising in all of the tier 1 cities. Living in Beijing and Shanghai for example, will soon be more expensive than New York or Hong Kong, except you get to enjoy the pollution, extremely rude people and third world conditions.

Oh i was told by a teacher who's worked in china that it was dead cheap eating out. I think she was in fushian though. Korea is expensive for food. 22usd for two 8oz steaks for example. China can't be as expensive as that can it?

Visa runs to Hong Kong are only practical if you are working in Shenzhen or Guangzhou or in some smaller place in Guangdong Province. If you are in Guangdong Province it is a reasonably short trip to Hong Kong. It took me about 5 hours door to door (leaving my apartment in Guangzhou and returning) for the visa runs. Contact Wendy at 136 0308 2914, but keep the conversation simple or she will have trouble understanding. She answers messages promptly and usually answers when you call. Her email address is "citsvisa <[email protected]>. You can deal with her from anywhere in the world. Send her your passport and, perhaps, a business card (doesn't have to be legitimate, and she will tell you what she needs) via a reliable overnight delivery service (FedEx, DHL, UPS, or various other services if you are in China); your passport will go to the Chinese embassy in Los Angeles and will come back to her with the visa; she will send you a copy of your passport page with visa; you wire her money; she sends passport to you via reliable overnight delivery service. I worked with her for some years. No problems.
