The huge drop in salary may also be a result of changing business needs. Working on a startup from the ground up often entails wider but specific experience and qualifications; teachers are required to wear many hats and sometimes work long hours. Those high-paying contracts may have reflected those particular business needs at that time. Ditto if the facility is located in an unstable part of the country.

That's wishful thinking indeed, but a nice bit to tell their next employer.

What's wishful thinking in regard to my comments?

As far as I could tell it was mostly friends and connections that landed you the job, as would be expected when there is a lot of money to be made. It is unlikely that any special skills or experience were required beyond the norm for teaching English out of a book to typical unmotivated Saudi youth. It was a cushy job money-wise, for as long as one could stand the location and lack of vacation.

This is 1000% true.

The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth in one short paragraph-the tefl industry is not a meritocracy.

Which is a good reason to network, especially at events like TESOL Arabia. I've made some major connections, which include two US embassy Regional English Language Officers, US and overseas university development and IEP directors, and a couple of AMIDEAST country directors. I'm still in touch with many of these folks via LinkedIn.

So correct is the 13.5k, or the 30k Balzac figure? When Amideast managed things a couple years back (still are?), $72k + expenses was the deal. The workload isn't too bad, but time off is low.

The lower figure is the current salary on offer at SESP and what I posted previously is the former e.g. what I was offered last year.

I know a friend who was contacted by SESP recently and offered the 13.5K figure which was later increased to 14K. He turned it down by the way.

They are really struggling to get well qualified staff these days with the significant drop (off a cliff!) in salary and general benefits. On top of that, they are still only offering 21 days holiday a year which has to rank as one of the lowest in the kingdom!

Yeah, that's a bad deal. Are the Amideast contracts still being honored, or have they cut those as well?

The salary wouldn't be the worst thing if the job was in Riyadh. The job is in Baish....HELL NO!!!

Then take the Riyadh offer. Regardless, you're not going to get the level of salary you want with your qualifications.

There are actually things to do in Jazan. There are the Farasan Islands just off the coast which has world-class diving (and quite good snorkeling). You can do sports fishing. There are decent beaches for swimming. And there are mountains nearby for those who like to hike. Baboons are in and around the mountains, stray camels, a man-made reservoir with some nice scenery, etc...

For me, this was more appealing than if I were to live in Riyadh.

Second that.

The vastness of the country can provide a good opportunity to get close to nature. Get yourself some wheels and away you go.

Desert camps, mountain hikes, deserted beaches......

Even just a thirty minute drive out of Riyadh there are some nice cliff formations and good sand dunes.

I just gave a current rundown on SESP in a new thread.

Here is the link: http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=115076

It is a place to be avoided for now - for your own safety.
