I have been here a few years. Would say to any newbie coming here. The first six months or so are the most difficult or challenging. After a year you will have it all figured out.

In respect of 72k. For sure a much higher salary is possible - well over $100k. In my own case negotiation was possible. Though, on this forum one or two will say it is my ego or not true or what ever etc., doesn't really bother me.

Equally, you will get the usual one line totally meaningless retarded reply from the KSA forum degenerate who longs for times past.....' or join the 5OO club and live the world for the mighty....yaddah.... yadah....yaddah'. All really very laughable, times have moved on.

To the OP, just get your resume out there. Get your resume to the contractors - Al Hoty, Jal, SRACO, Hak etc. and see where it goes.

Wishing you the best of luck.

It is worth noting that for direct hire university jobs, there are salary scales, Just as in the civil service in any country, you will be slotted onto a salary scale depending on qualifications and experience. No room for negotiations. A strange factor in KSA is that experience is only counted AFTER the award if the highest degree that you hold. So a BA with 20 years teaching after it might get you more than a PhD with 5.

Sure, that would be the case, in theory. However, someone with 20 years' experience will very likely find that salaries are capped at a lower number of years. Salaries aren't as strong as they used to be either. Additionally, employers tend to first look at the highest and/or relevant degree (i.e., the required/preferred education) and the applicant's experience second. That means BA holders will find it hard to compete against those with MAs and PhDs, regardless of the number of years of experience. Plus, if the individual with 20 years and a BA hasn't shown much, if any, growth or progression in their career over that span of years, prospective employers aren't going to be enthusiastic about his/her CV and subsequently, may extend a low-ball offer.

Dear myohmy,

"One is probably far more likely to get booted from "Dave's" for questioning the wisdom of an all-knowing old-timer."

Not to worry - I promise that I will use my enormous influence with my old buddy, Dave, to make sure that none of those nasty old-timers does you wrong. Very Happy

Regards,
John

.. and the applicant's passport and nationality (this might take precedent on other criteria!).
A salary of an applicant from Egypt or Pakistan with a PhD is third or half of that from a UK or USA.

I would think twice about taking advice from someone who says that you have no need for a Saudi bank account !

Or who pays me the compliment of calling me a "degenerate" ! Ah, if only !

I know a few guys from Jordan and Egypt, very well qualified and professional, some of them are here many years. They just have the wrong passport for the employer. Just how it is.

The best part about having a coveted higher paying job here in ESL is... you can be replaced. They'll be in the process of letting you go, while taking calls from a recruiter to discuss your replacement. It's that unprofessional. Like, they'll rub it in.

Yep, the ad is for Saudi Electric Services Polytechnic (SESP).

Locations:
MALE Riyadh Dammam Baish
FEMALE Al Khobar Al Kharj Mecca Wadi Al Dawaser Najran

Packages (dependent upon experience and location) are c.£21k / $33k to £45k / $72k TAX FREE per year + free housing / generous allowances, transportation to and from work, visa, mobile, return flights, 30 days annual leave.

That highest salary is likely for Baish, which is near the Yemeni border.

Is Baish an undesirable place to live? Why is the pay for teaching there much higher than the others?

It is correct that the salary was for SESP.

The salaries are no longer like that, and it would not currently be a safe place to work for any amount of money, IMO.

And I am not talking about Baish, I am talking about working for SESP...anywhere at the moment.

I just gave a current rundown on SESP in a new thread.

Here is the link: http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=115076

Again, it is a place to be avoided for now.
