I would say, from reading your post, that Shanghai might be a good fit for you. The fact that you enjoy urban life and possibly wish to deviate from teaching in the future. You can make contacts quite easily here in all sorts of fields eg. Science, Engineering, Food & Bev, IT, Marketing, etc, etc. I enjoy teaching (particularly all the hols haha) at the moment but may consider a change in the future (my background's in Science/Industry).
Good Luck!

As somebody who first visited China in 1987, I have a pretty good knowledge of all lame things you could and couldn't do 30 years ago in China - but on the subject of present day internet connections.......
The state of Chinese internet - the censorship, the speed of service, the prospect of having your mails and internet activity scrutinised by your 'masters' - is often given as a reason for leaving this country. Only today on the other China board we have a thread about how this very site is being blocked.
Like I said in my first post - all very convenient!!!!

You missed the point there old timer Laughing . The internet makes like here more convenient by way of allowing people to obtain things they otherwise would have trouble getting. And I doubt this site is actually blocked. The person who reported that didn't say what he got when he tried to access this site. It was possibly a PhPBB critical error message (which I also get from time to time) and has nothing to do with the great firewall, and more to do with how this site is constructed. And people reading your mail? What are they going to find out? That you're ordering adult diapers from Taobao? Laughing

Have a good day sir.

Think you missed the point - despite the fact that we now have the likes of Taobao and the relative freedom of a VPN, its very fact that you're in an environment where internet is censored and mails are snooped upon that might get a few people riled when the word convenient is linked to that of Chinese internet - but then again who gives a flying *beep* what a pea-brained moron of an FT ever thinks Question
