Sad to see this news. I liked this site a lot. They also were good about including world and regional news. More and more sites require payment, so I found this site to be of value for more than just national news. They do not say much about what is happening, but perhaps they will continue in some form, I think their paper version is Vietweek.
This site was really pretty good. I was surprised they were able to get away with publishing some of the stuff they put up. It was interesting to see what they felt they could publish, and what they never touched. I will miss this site a lot.
Advertising is how sites survive, or paid access. Many of the best sites have dropped free access over the years, perhaps they knew that would not pan out here, and maybe their advertising was not enough to pay the bills. Interesting to see how major publications in the U.S. have lost most of their value. The Washington Post had a very high value some years past, but when they finally sold it, the value was in the millions, not the billions.
Another interesting aspect of all this, Craigslist was quite instrumental in taking away value from publications with their free classifieds. CL continues to do so, but it has really become cumbersome and in need of management itself. Here in VN, it is especially bad. Ads for apartments and motorbikes are ridiculous. Certain businesses employ cheap labor to spew out duplicate ads day and night, and so an individual's ad for a motorbike or a house is buried under countless duplicate ads.
In 2004 we launched thanhniennews.com to bring all the latest information about Vietnam to English-speaking readers in the country and abroad.
Twelve years later, today, with a heavy heart, we announce the closure of the website owing to our company's major reorganization plans. From September 15, 2016, the website will no longer be updated. All the articles we have published can still be found in the Archive.
Thanks to you, dear reader, Thanh Nien News was among the most popular English-language news websites in Vietnam.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all your time and attention over the past 12 years, which contributed to the website’s great success.
Goodbye.

Agreed. It will leave a gap. I'm curious why it has stopped too, but it may just be economic factors. |

Yes, I think lots of people browsed the site, and I do not think anyone else did a better job than they did, especially in English. Perhaps people were reluctant to pay for their Vietnews when they could instead get the online site for free. I don't know, I never buy printed news here, and know nothing about the rest of their offerings.
Let's see what Toi Tre does, in the past, they did not seem to update as much as Thanh Nien. Maybe they will seize the moment. |

Yes, Tuoi Tre is fairly good for VN news.

Just ran across this one too:

If you have a google account you can personalize their news aggregator (news.google.com) by adding any news topic, for example "Vietnam". |
