If your old one was cut up by authorities, how were you supposed to know you would possibly need it?
Personally I think it's just the authorities on a power trip to keep out as many of us possible. Many would tell me it's a conspiracy but one of my old friends did tell me that someone higher up who he knew told him in a conversation authorities are doing stuff like this to keep out as many of us possible. |
Cut up by authorities?
My exp is that passport offices are aware of the occasional need to produce the old document and return it with a corner cut off. |

They will return the old one to you if you request it. But on the form where the question comes up "would you like your old passport returned to you?". You can say yes or no. I said no because I didn't think that I would ever need it.
So if I did have to go back to China for any reason, I won't be able to. Ever again. Not that I care much for the country because of the discrimination and social segregation I faced. But if I ever had a son or daughter who went there 20 years from now and something happened and they needed my assistance, I would never be able to get in ever again. |

I don't know about that. You overestimate Chinese admin 
I suspect a 'clean' passport with no visa in will do just fine. Just don't tell them you've been to China before. |

Do you know anyone personally who answered "no" when in fact they really have been to china before? And still got their visa?
I always thought that if you answered no, they'd still have a way to know if you've been to their country before. |

| Asian cultures do not tend to emphasize the same things Western cultures do such as critical thinking skills or empathy and moral imperatives. Which is why they are so messed up. A good example is when immigration requires a plane itinerary to obtain a Z visa. No one in their right mind is going to not cancel the tickets when the obtaining the visa (at least in a timely manner) itself is unsure. You can do everything that you should reasonably supposed to do for a visa but little petty issues creep up and can screw up the whole process. Who in their right mind would think you would need an old used up passport? Fortunately I kept mine as a souvenir. |
