Good luck!

I think you will be fine personally. Guangdong has taken this route since August 1st and nobody has been on here or elsewhere yet bitching about flying there and then getting stir fried at the border.

It will happen due to deceit or incompetence, but the process itself seems sound.

From what you say and I have read, it really sounds like they have simply done away with the z-visa and issuing foreign consulate from the process. It sounds like you arrive and they directly issue the work permit that has already been authorized.

Still a pain and expense to get the tourist visa. It would be nice if you could just arrive with no visa as people are doing for the transit visa, or better yet the copy sent to the teacher would act as the arrival visa.

It would be nice to hear how it works out for you.

My feeling about all this is that I'm happy to be adaptable. The university lost a teacher last minute, so they're trying to get me there as fast as possible.

They did email me a copy of my work permit that they got from the immigration office. They didn't want me to get the tourist visa until the work permit came through.

So I think if things get a little difficult with immigration, my school will help me, and I think the worst case scenario is I might have to re-enter through Hong Kong, which is no big deal. I doubt very seriously that I would have to be "sent back."

I managed to find some good last-minute deals, so the round trip ticket won't be too much of an expense.

Wish me luck!

Wow! Such guanxi for a relatively new school. They procured a residence permit for you before you took a Chinese health exam?

I will definitely post my experience here once I have my new Z visa and work permit. I know that this university has been hiring FTs for fifteen years and they are doing this new process carefully because it's new to them as well. I also did the medical exam here with all the required tests. So really the process is the same of the Z visa only with the added requirements of a tourist visa. So all in all a little more of an expense/hassle, but so far nothing intolerable Smile

Miss Hoffman,

You should probably contact the school and ask them about Guangdong ALSO being a pilot program for the new classification system. This it seems was implemented November 1st. It may have impacted the pilot program you seem to be coming under which was started August 1st.

I'm curious about the new process in Guangdong-specifically with regard the medical....here in Guangxi-which, as an autonomous state, whatever that really means. we weren't required to submit any authenticated documents prior to the issuing of the Z visa-which was sent to me in jakarta for processing.....and the medical I undertook and submitted in July [done in an Omani hospital] was accepted also. There was little ol'me-expecting to be whisked off to the Chinese hospital...within 1-2 days of arrival. What this means of course is that 'I've' paid for the medical-a cost which I believe is supposed to be covered by the employer....the times-they are confusing, right now! Different states/ provinces seem to be operating under totally different criteria.... Shocked
