If anyone has any current info on the availability of teaching jobs, pay scales, etc. in Guadalajara, I sure would appreciate hearing from you. I really like the city and have spent a few weeks there (back in '96 and '9 . I currently teach part-time for Berlitz here in the U.S. I am not ESL certified but do have a B.S. (but not in English). I would probably be making my move to Mexico in November. I am leaning strongly towards doing it, and with the idea of making it a long-term move. I just want to make half-way sure that finding a full-time job that pays enough to live on is not asking for too much.
Help me make my decision folks.
Thanks, |

Hi Scott,
Did you get any response on this? I am leaving for Guadalajara on August 24, I was offered a job at a school teaching small classes. I don't have my TEFL, and I was pretty sure I didn't really have a chance because of that and because I wasn't in Mexico interviewing, but after a couple of tests, a long questionnaire and an hour long phone interview I was accepted.
I am also booked for the ITTO class, so if it doesn't work out I will have a back-up plan.
I don't know how high the market is (I will find out soon), but I do know my pay will be 7000 pesos after taxes. Not the greatest, but I have heard of worse and as long as I can live and hang out with my friends during holidays I will enjoy it...
I will also be needing to find a place when I get there, and the school will help me...so I can give you more info later... |

Cybercutie,
Congratulations on finding a job in Guadalajara. I'm sure you're really going to enjoy it there. I have never lived in Guadalajara but I have spent some time there. Very neat place with lots to do and see. I liked the fact that it is a big city but that it has the feel of a smaller one. I also loved the European look and of the old central part of the city.
I did get some private e-mails in response to my inquiry. It sounds like Guadalajara is among the better places to go in Mexico for finding English teaching work. It also sounds like there is a good selection of places to live that aren't overly expensive.
I have just accepted a new job (in the insurance industry) up here in St Louis. It is a temporary assignment and I'm not sure how long it may last. I'm fairly sure that I wouldn't be coming to Mexico until at least January and perhaps later.
Good luck with the job and enjoy Guadalajara. I think you're making a really great move.
Oh, if you happen to find out anything about whitewater canoeing and rafting in Jalisco, can you let me know. I have read that the Rio Grande de Santiago , which flows thru the huge canyon on the northern edge of the city, has numerous large rapids. Unfortunately, a book printed in 1998 said that the river is almost dangerously polluted. If you can find out anything about this for me, I sure would appreciate it.
Have fun ! |
