I've read previous threads. I'm wondering what current/former lecturers think about Chongqing University?

If you have an MA and experience I think they're lowballing with the salary, especially with the 'desirable' qualifications and work expected (seems to be EAP focused). If you have a CELTA and little experience it could be a good first job.

That said the apartment looks nice.

salary is incredibly low even by Chinese university standards, also the city feels very provincial, not a lot of expats here, not much of an expat scene from I've been able to figure out since I got here.

Why care about expat scenes? Mostly depressing anyway. Go to NUTS CLUB. Meet the crews there. Repeat.

I would not have thought that Chongqing is a MASSIVE place.

A point about salary - it's quite good for a Chinese university, 8,000 is near the higher end. HOWEVER for the qualifications and experience they're looking for, there are better deals.

There are tons of expats in Chongqing, the poster maybe is looking in the wrong places (if that is what they are looking for)?

I've been interested in hearing about what it is like at this university for a few years now. I interviewed for them in 2015 and it was a piece of cake. I have a MA in ESOL, CELTA plus seven years of uni experience in South Korea and Saudi Arabia. They were very professional and my interview lasted about thirty minutes. They had three people interview me and it was good. The only thing I didn't like was that they didn't have a textbook and that you would develop your own materials for the semester.

The apartment looks good and I think they have 35 thousand students on campus. There is an expat scene and I think the salary is comparable to other universities.

As I mentioned in a previous thread, I interviewed there a couple of years ago. I got a bad vibe from Pedro the King. It was a bit weird to me. He asked me weird questions about my doctoral thesis, like he was trying to one-up me. The other Chinese on the interview panel seemed nice. I never heard back from them. I eventually sent them an email asking why I never got any response. The woman (office worker) said I didn't have enough university experience. Bizarre. I'd been the director of a university programme in China, and just worked at the top-ranking uni in Australia.

I now work at an international university in a much nicer city in southern China earning nearly four times as much money. Glad I didn't get the Chongqing gig.

BTW, the job may be fine for others. My sense was that Pedro didn't want anyone to outrank him. Anyway, his gig, his call. Good luck to him.
