IELTS can be an excellent side job.
If your based at a decent university, that also happens to be an IELTS center, then it can be a great combo. XJTLU used to have IELTS, and I believe it has it again. |

I remember receiving an email from the BC about this. I think XJTLU was the university concerned, but to be honest it didn't affect me so I didn't really pay a lot of attention to it. From what I remember, this was an ad hoc type of thing. The full-time BC examiners were less than pleased in the region and BC said:
1) Part-time examiners (university employees) will only do speaking tests.
2) And only do these when there are no full-timers to go there.
3) It is a one-off deal.
Number 1 is likely to remain true. Numbers 2 and 3 depend on which way the wind blows.
If the opportunity is at XJTLU to do some IELTS testing as well as teaching, then that is a big plus they have over Ningbo for teachers considering applying, in my opinion.

For the salary offer, it will depend on your profile. Many go in near the top end of the scale, although I noticed that the top end appears to have been lowered slightly.

I saw XJTLU advertising when I was job hunting and considered applying until I saw the quoted salary range, figuring I may get an offer but it would likely be at the lower end to start. Will consider applying after a couple of years experience in a similar position and raising the ole profile.
I do hope we are talking about academic, experience, and public (conferences and publications) profile and not Dave's esl café profiles. If it was the latter, I would get offered CNY 25.00 an hour, two bananas, one packet of peanuts, and transport to work and back in an Audi.
Time to lower a profile while raising another. |

Yes I am, examiner. I will never cross paths with you.

Yes. No.

You mention naked women and illegal drugs -tsk tsk, examiner. Is this really the calibre of person we want in China, IELTS examining?
Yes, you are examiner. Yes you are. |

Déjà vu = all over again. Semantics, but anyway.
Those who work for, or defend the BC or the righteous role of IELTS examiners are firmly within my cross hairs.
But, it's 2017. Not going to get off to a bad start by arguing with the above. Today, at least.
Out. |

Good point. Threads should be merged, and I guess all the off-topic stuff deleted. But it is not wise to suggest this to the higher powers, I don't fancy a ban. |

The reason for having multiple threads on this topic is because the situation with the BC changes all the time. What was true last year is most certainly not going to be true this year. What never changes is the slimy management and that is something people will only learn about from others who have first-hand knowledge of working within the BC's system. As has been alluded to here in several replies is how the contract will change this year. Given that it is the BC, it will not change in any way that benefits examiners. Anyone contemplating working for this outfit should go in with their eyes open fully aware of the need to bend over on a regular basis - sooner or later, you will get sc****d. Armed with the latest knowledge about the job will make the decision, either way, a lot easier.

I don't disagree with that, but in this particular case, it seems that the situation with BC hasn't changed much from the beginning of 2016 (first thread) to the end of 2016 (second thread). A lot of the points and voices from the first thread were simply echoed and amplified in that second thread, so why not just continue with the original thread instead of creating a new one? That way people can follow the history and all of the twists and turns over the months, rather than creating a new thread which overshadows the original one.
Just my ten jiao. I do appreciate all insights about the BC as I had considered applying for an examiner's position at one time (those considerations have since evaporated).

The BC are changing IELTS Examiner contracts in the coming months. They are still advertising for examiners without mentioning the terms will shortly change and a completely different contract will be offered.
Also, anyone recruited from overseas will be required to pay back substantial training/flight/accommodation costs if they wish to leave prior to contract completion.
Be warned. |

This is true for all BC contracts. If you break it, your flight and two weeks hotel accommodation comes out of your final salary. This is fair enough normally but I agree not at all fair if they change the contract mid-term. This actually happened to me in another BC centre but they agreed not to subtract it in the end. |
