Hi all
Firstly, thank you to everyone who has helped me out on here so far. Very helpful. I've received an offer of 13000rmb per month at a public middle school in Guangzhou city for 25 hours a week. This is inclusive of housing allowance. 6000 for airfare. I have 18 months experience from public schools in Vietnam. Is this a reasonable offer or could I ask for more? |

You can always ask for more. Whether you'll get it or not is another matter. It might also mean they break off contact and you're back to square one with the job hunting. As to whether it's enough or not, I don't know Guangzhou very well, but I do know it's not cheap. Try to find out the cost of decent accommodation near the school you'll be working in. Guangzhou's a big city, and commuting is hell, especially on the subway. |

If housing is "inclusive" that means 7k a month? |

Hell. These airfare allowances are being clipped. |

I think he means an apartment is likely to cost you 6k a month, leaving you with 7k for everything else. |

I agree with doogsville. You better get the use of the term "inclusive" clarified. As it is used, it means that the quoted remuneration includes the rent of the apartment.
You might want them to change "inclusive" to included.
Also, 6,000rmb won't cover the cost of round trip tickets unless, perhaps, you will be flying from the Philippines, perhaps. From the UK or USA, that won't even cover the cost of a one-way ticket. |

It sounds rather atrocious to me from what you have said. They are looking for a sucker, don't be the one. I would just walk even if you could negotiate for more. |

I thought Guangzhou was a cheaper area than Shenzhen. Shenzhen you can get places around 3000 RMB/month give or take.
I think 13,000 RMB/month is doable. If you only have 18 months teaching experience, not sure you'll have much leverage to negotiate your salary upwards. But I don't know. |

The 'killer' for me with off-campus accommodation is what do you do on split shift days?
8am to 10 and then 2 to 4pm.
25 hours is too many if it's all contact time. |

How about monthly salary increase after 6 months? I've seen this on some job offers.
Also contract completion bonus. Should I ask for that? |

I have a bad feeling about this. Keep applying while you sort through the details. |

It's a public middle school. Why would there be a split shift? Or are you talking about the lunch break?
I agree that the 25 hours seems high. I thought public schools max out at 18 or so. But if it's an experimental school, they might have a higher max. |

Public school won't increase the salary after six months. Pretty sure about that. |
