They did indeed live in an hotel.
If you can exist for a semester in what is effectively an en suite hotel room (no cooking - which was in communal kitchens) you are a better man than I.
By comparison Dalian Maritime had one or two bed apartments with sitting room and bathroom. Facing south and very sunny.
I used to come across one DUT teacher sitting in the nearest KFC in winter just to get out of the hotel.
International students shared the floor and kitchen. |
Forget that. |

They were decently furnished-cleaned, as I recall......with no utility charges-internet and phone provided. SO they had communal kitchens and laundry facilities? At least everything worked. Having recently experienced the pleasure of staying in a 'furnished apartment' provided by Guangxi University in Nanning, with old and broken furniture, charges for utilities, an unsanitary moldy bathroom- I know which I would prefer..... |

Perhaps it's my age but having a chat while one or both is required (there being no alternative) to sit on the bed is not my ideal scenario. |

I have heard good things about SATC, so if you work there, everything should be okay.
The apartments were nice at DUFE...especially for a single person. 3 rooms, and a big bathroom. Your own washer, nice kitchen, etc. Heating in the winter is now provided by hot water, so it runs 24/7, unlike other places where it's shut off at night.
IBC (called SIB before) is a purely team-driven environment. The salary may be high, but there is almost no autonomy, and you work under a coordinator who tells you what to teach. It's a very standardized, "American-style" teaching program, where you have to follow the plan to a "T". I had heard that the workload was getting heavier and heavier after I had left, and that re-submissions for certain exams had to be done.
Lesson plans are done on a rotational basis, and must be submitted to the team through an online "cloud". Everyone must follow your plan.
When I was there, it was necessary to stick very strictly to the book, so that all members of the team were on the same page.
You are given a syllabus at the beginning of the semester, and have to follow the syllabus strictly. Therefore, there is really not much room for creativity.
The students were hard-working, and the first-years were especially great. Dalian is a good city, but is cold almost half the year. |

Ah, sounds awful. It's bad enough when you sub and have someone else's lesson plan to follow. Teaching, in many ways, is individualistic, not something that can be distilled down into a series of steps. |

I visited Dalian and had a very constructive meeting and visit to DUFE last month. A different type of job opportunity meant I declined their offer but I was very taken with what they had to offer - a pleasant little campus close to some nice coastal walks, basic but OK apartments, and an organised & ambitious teaching programme.
I observed 1 class and was really impressed by the classroom atmosphere and the students' spoken abilities. Chatting with the teacher, I learnt that a lot of lessons are shared with the objective of improving them through personalisation.
Seemed a good place to develop teaching skills and experience a fairly relaxing (in China!) way of life. |
