I have been offered a job as a teacher in China and I have my B.Ed. I was told I have to send them (to the states) my original degree for my visa application.. it is an American school, and I am Canadian. I am tentative to send my original diploma to them after being told by my university that it is the only one that I can get.
I was going to phone the Chinese embassy here in Canada to ask if they can verify my degree and ask the school if they will accept that, or does anyone know an option other than sending this school my original degree? They said they will not accept a verified copy signed by my university.. that seemed to be the most logical option instead of sending my one and only original in the mail.

Also there seems to be quite a bit of work to be done for a visa.. do schools normally pay or reimburse for some of these costs?. eg. criminal record check, etc..

Your post is a bit confusing because it seems you're using the terms school and university interchangeably. Which entity requires your original diploma: your US university or a school in China?

Home country costs are usually teachers responsibility.
China the school pays.

Seems that if you are living in Canada, and you need to get your US degree authenticated, then a specialist service might be the way forward.

I have just being doing all this in the UK, and it is enough trouble when I live in London, let alone if I was elsewhere.

I would not expect this cost to be reinbursed, but since you only need to do it once, you could write it off as a cost that will benefit you in future as well?

I thought the Chinese authorities would not accept degrees from outside one's home country. It pops on boards from time to time enough that it appears to be the policy in at least some jurisdictions.

The Chinese Consulate can only verify an original degree. I have just found out that they can't notarize or authenticate the original. I am in the process of figuring out if I can authenticate a degree within China.

Have you gone to a Notary Public within China? Not sure if they'll only do Chinese ones, or can do ones from outside of China.

I highly doubt your school would reimburse you for these costs. I was not reimbursed for getting my documents ready when I was coming to China from Canada. I also never had to send my original degree to China. However, that was three years ago. I know things have changed so much recently, that it could be possible they need it. I would also be hesitant sending my original to China.

What you could do is get the Canadian Consulate to photocopy the original and stamp it saying that they verify it is a true copy of the original. I had this done recently in China at the Canadian Consulate thinking it may pass for degree authentication, but it does not. It does however, show that it is a true original. You could ask your new school about it? Since you have your BEd. will you be teaching in an international school?
