I've found 16 a doddle and even better if you can cover them in 4 days.

As long as the basics are covered the availability of supermarkets are details.

Hello.

Free accommodation on campus - 2 bedroom apartment. There is a limit to light and water usage though. The contract says when I use too much in a month, I will have to cover the extra expenses.

Not more than 16 lessons but most times 12 lessons.

2200 travel allowance paid at the end of contract.

No help with visa and other application processes before heading to China. When in China then there will be help and payment for residence permit etc |

1. Expect to pay anywhere from 100-400 extra a month for utilities.

2. Expect 16 teaching hours. Assuming each lesson is 45 minute sessions in which I hope clarified.

3. 2,200 travel allowance is common (nothing special)

4. WTF? No help with visa? Are you coming in on a tourist visa? If they send you documents for Z visa, the rest is straight forward.

I'm starting to see why recruiters push this uni so often |

				| "A decent gig'.....less than minimum wage U.S? Why would somebody go through the expense of educating themselves to M.A. level and then happily accept this? Oh well, if you really are interested at least make sure it will be 'oral' classes, not teaching academic writing. And if it is, on this salary you're being well and truly screwed over. |

Thanks so much for your reply.

1. Lol, I guess that's what it is. It basically says "The amount of electricity is 1200 killowatt-hours per year and the water 10 tons per month. Extra amount is at Party B’s expense."

2. I guess so because he said not more than 16 but most times it is 12 lessons. 45 minutes per lesson.

3. Yes, definitely nothing special.

No office time, he says my job is just to deliver the lessons and leave. 😳

4. I have to pay for visa myself and will not get reimbursed. The University will then pay the expenses for residence permit, work permit, etc.

The university will provide documents for z visa. |

2200 is sh*t and you should walk now!

2200 is what you get for winter break travel. End of contract should be 8000 minimum.

So-called airfare allowance.

Yep home country expenses are normally teacher responsibility (incl medical).

China expenses - further medical + residence are for school to pay.

Others may have more recent experience, but your's is the first instance I've encountered where zero is offered for air travel. |

I have to agree with NS and Tazz.

I don't think this is a good deal. I agree with NS: 2,200 for end-of-contract travel reimbursement is way too low.

M.A. in Linguistics to be at Chizhou in Anhui? I would say no. I think there are better places to get experience with such a master's degree.

Also, Chizhou, Anhui sounds like a third-tier locale. If you are a first timer to China, I would recommend at least a second-tier locale to start out in (second tier--cities such as Nanjing, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an, Shenyang, Dalian, Harbin, Wuhan, Tianjin). Furthermore, as a black female in Chizhou, Anhui, you will get lots of unwanted attention--it will be stressful.

MOD EDIT

May I politely suggest grammar is important when teaching in China, poor grammar gives Teachers a bad name.

The university is on the outskirts of the city, so you will need to use public transport to go shopping etc. There is a regular bus service, but you will need to compete with the students and locals, hope you have a lot of patience! The salary is high for the area, the last two teachers received less than 6500yuan and remember you will be required to attend English corners regularly.

Chizhou is a small city, there is nothing there to interest a foreign visitor other than the JiuHua mountains, which are beautiful, but take an hour to reach.

There are 3 KFC's, the one McDonald's cafe has closed.

There is one large supermarket, named RT Mart, they sell some foreign items such as pasta, cornflakes and biscuits. The other large supermarket in the centre of the city s closing.

There are very few foreign people in ChiZhou, so you need to be happy with your own company or hope any other Foreign teachers are friendly. (Not all are). Being a small and traditional city, few speak English, so be prepared to use body language and or take a student when needed.

In conclusion, as long as you are happy with your own company, don't want a night life and have the patience of a saint to use the public transport, you may need to think twice as this is not the place for you. |

Thank you so so much, I appreciate this detailed information. Definitely sounds like the campus and city I got my BA from. I will definitely try and get the contact number of one of the foreign teachers. I also do love my own company, I barely go out as long as I have food and books, haha.

I am a black female so I am hoping I will be received well in that area. The interviewer says it is beyond his duty to give me the contact details of one of their foreign teachers. Please what should I do? |

They won't give out contact details as they are aware that the teachers may give a negative review, they are desperate for foreign teachers as they are trying to attain University status, in reality, it is ChiZhou College, I am really sorry to say this but there was a black teacher some years ago, she lasted 1 semester before being terminated due to racism, you need to realise that Anhui is a very very traditional province, coloured people are not common and regarded with suspicion. I honestly think you would be far better looking at either a large city such as Shanghai or better still Guangzhou, as these cities are more open minded and less racial. I am just being honest |

The utility charges are standard contract terms, but have never been invoked to my knowledge, the gas bottles last a long time and the teachers were reimbursed when replaced. I used several heaters constantly for 4 months and never got charged.

Usually, the classes are around 12-14 at 50 mins each.

The 2200 is on top of the flight fare which is 8k round trip.

The Z visa is sorted out within a short time on arrival in Chizhou and the college pays for it.

Chizhou and Chuzhou are two very different cities in Anhui, one rich, Chuzhou the other poor, Chizhou. |

^^^Ah, 2,200 + 8,000 for travel, that is a different story. I shall agree with ChrisHenry15's statement above: common, but nothing special.

Nonetheless, I still stand by my other points that I made in my previous post.

Chongqing University (CU) and Chongqing municipality could be better places to start out in China to gain experience. Do a search and check previous posts about CU and Chongqing here on Dave's ESL Cafe.

Do a search and check previous posts about CU here on Dave's ESL Cafe.

I worked in Chizhou University for over 7 years, but what would I know lol.

I'm guessing you have never been to Chongqing, it is one of the "Three furnaces" the hottest place in all China together with excessive humidity, I would think the last place someone fresh out of the UK would want to experience for their very first time in China, but each to their own! |
