@bigdurian: don't know about boozers in the SE of England my big, smelly, spikey tropical fruit matey, I do remember some boozers in the north having a lock-in though. I have not been back to the godforsaken places for years, so it would probably be a harrowing experience, especially compared with east asia.

@graham: that avatar pic is inspired, where on earth did you find that, and who is it?

It's Father Jack, the elderly priest from the "Father Ted" comedy programme. I looked for a suitable picture of him on Google and settled on that one. It's from the "Speed 3" episode where he has a brick as a pet.

Stop wasting time with recruiters; for teaching vacancies in Scotland go to

https://www.myjobscotland.gov.uk/categories/education

Thanks! I'll definitely have a look at that link. I wouldn't waste my time with agencies, except I don't have a British or European passport and I'm too old to get a working holiday visa. The UK Government do offer a skilled visa for teachers of certain subjects, but, last I checked, that was only for some sciences and mathematics and my teaching areas will be the humanities and English.

The recruiters I'm talking about specialize in allocating foreign teachers to schools and they already know which schools are prepared to go through the rigmarole of organizing visa sponsorship. If I had that information then I'd just apply directly, but I don't. True, I could try applying to schools, but, my bet would be that as soon as they find out about the visa headaches, the vast, vast majority of them would just chuck my application into the bin. Might be worth a try though, you never know. Anyway, like I said, it's just something I'm mulling over at this stage and I'm not even sure if I want to do it yet.

By the way, applications should be sent to the relevant local authority, not to schools.

I hear ya. I don't doubt it and, like I said, there must be reasons as to why they are experiencing teacher shortages. However, if I work in Australia, chances are that I'll be sent to an outback posting, which has its own set of disadvantages and problems. Besides, there are a lot of well-paid British international schools out there and a couple of years of UK experience would come in handy. I'm not averse to paying my dues providing it leads to something better later on. Anyway, although the thought of living in Europe is appealing, it probably won't happen and, at this stage, it's just one of many possible options. I'm just trying to keep an open mind in regards to the opportunities out there. I appreciate the advice though and good luck with the rest of your course!

Why is it only the UK or Australia that you're interested in? Rather an international school in Asia. Even the Middle East would be better.

40% of teachers quit within the first year in the UK (https://www.theguardian.com/education/2015/mar/31/four-in-10-new-teachers-quit-within-a-year). An absolutely massive attrition rate. There's a very good chance you won't last 2 years even if you find a job (no one thinks they'll be part of that 40% when starting, but clearly many people are).

You don't have to 'pay your dues' in the UK (tbh I don't believe in the 'paying dues' mentality anyway). Go to a lower tier international school abroad instead. I'm going to qualify in July and have secured a job abroad without any post-qualification experience. And I teach Primary, so nothing in-demand like Science or Maths.

UK NQT's are paid lower than an EFL teacher can easily get in most countries in Asia these days. They have a LOT more work and the cost of living is a lot higher too. There's no good reason to come here, none at all. Stay in SEA, the lifestyle is a ton better.

2 and a half months until I'm free...marking another day off on the calander...

Very interesting and very helpful! Thanks. Good to know.

BTW, I like Father Ted too. They were all good, but that episode when they entered Eurovision was an absolute classic Laughing.

I'm not just interested in working in the UK or Australia. I'm really keen on an opportunity in Brunei with CfBT at the moment, but, I may need more experience in a secondary school. I'm going to apply anyway in June. All they can do is say no. But, yeah, if I can, let's say, get a decent gig in Thailand or Sri Lanka or Nepal or somewhere else appealing then, trust me, I'll be there with bells on Smile.

Congratulations! Just out of interest, and if you don't mind me asking, whereabouts will you be going and how did you find the job?

Going to Moscow. Found the job using Search Associates (a recruiting agent for qualified teachers).

Thanks for the reply and that's good to hear! Sounds great. Personally, I wouldn't mind spending some time in Russia (fascinated by the history) and, like I said, being located in Europe is appealing. Hope you have a great time.

I know Search and actually had a Skype chat with one of their agents a while ago. Still thinking of joining, but, it's not cheap, naturally there is no guarantee of getting a position and the agent said that, while my TEFL experience wouldn't hurt, most of the international schools they represented required a couple of years post-graduate experience in secondary schools. Anyway, seems like a very well-respected agency which is actually selective in the schools they deal with and if you were able to get a job with them (without the post-graduate experience) then, like I said, that's really good to hear.

Hope you don't mind, but just have one more question. Did you get the job through a job fair or by using their job listings on their website? Thanks again.

Found it through the jobs database. I wasn't a competetive enough candidate to attend a fair - was advised of this by my assigned associate.

If you have a home address in the UK (or family with a UK address you can use) then Search Associates is free.

I'll look into that. I don't have any family in the UK, but, have quite a few friends living over there. Thanks again, that's really interesting to know!
