Does anyone have any recommendations about good cities to teach in in Taiwan? I realize that "good" is obviously subjective, so allow me to clarify what I mean by "good." When I say good, I mean a city around the size of Chicago with a public transportation system thats efficient and inexpensive. Also, a city where food, housing, and utilities are inexpensive. (When I say "inexpensive," I mean inexpensive relative to the average teacher's salary.) I want to live in a place that has things going on and a lot of foreign English teachers, but that isn't as expensive as Shanghai or Beijing or Seoul, a place where I can save some decent money and where there are enough jobs for us foreign English teachers to go around; also, a place where I'd feel safe. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Do you not realize that Taiwan is a small, tropical island?

Taipei is the only city in Taiwan with good public transport. It is also the only city that I have seen in Taiwan that has unobstructed sidewalks for pedestrians on a majority of it's major thoroughfares.
It is the largest city in Taiwan with a stable population around 4.5 million people compared to Chicago's 8+ million.

Try Tan Sui. It is at the farthest most point of Taipei's MRT system and has really cleaned up it's act the last couple of years. It also has a beach (dirty) and is not far from Taipei but has considerably lower living expenses.

Thank you for your reply, Aristotle. Do you know if Tan Sui has any expatriate Web sites? Also, what recruiters could you recommend that I talk to that hire people to work there? Thanks again.

You really need to go there and have a look around before you commit. You might hate it and find that the slum like squalor of the major cites is more to your liking.
The good employers don't advertise because they don't have to. Good things only happen to people with good connections on Taiwan. Personal referal or word of mouth is the best reference that you can get .
Come here and meet people.
