I concur. Why are you getting an online TEFL when you already have a CELTA? Are you getting a business visa or a Z visa?

I have asked about what visa I would be going over on so waiting to hear back. It has left my instincts over the offer full of doubts though unfortunately. As I am from the EU I think just jumping on a plane to Valencia or somewhere else in Spain would be less hassle and less risk. Even just getting a tourist visa to Vietnam or Thailand and see what happens is another idea. As for China, this visa stuff is turning into a big turn off.

Jiangsu doesn't recognize the CELTA (why I have no idea). EF will send he/she to Shanghai or Beijing to do the government TEFL course which the Jiangsu government will accept and forgo the 2 year experience requirement. I used to be a DOS at EF and we also had the same situation.

Let me chime in and say...

People on the boards are a little biased in regards to work at language schools. I came to China last year and signed up with a well known competitor of EF. It worked out for me.

I would assume that you will be safe working for a company like EF. There does appear to be the odd horror story here and there from other schools.

I just noticed that you are from the EU. That may make your experience different. I mentioned in another thread that it is pretty easy to go to groupon.com and get a TEFL for $5. I think I did mine in under 5 days.

I'm saying this because... I don't want you to feel spooked. Cautious, fine. But don't get run off from the possibility before you even get your feet wet. I think China has its merits. And in the end, after the paperwork hoops, it worked out well for me.

If they want to forgo the 2 year experience rule then they have to take the government TEFL course. At least that's how it was done before in Jiangsu. I haven't lived there in 3 years so not sure if things have changed.

Would you be willing to share which one?

I am SOO happy to find this post. I was going to come here and post the same about EF...I do have a few years in-class experience, as a Theater teacher (not teaching qualified/certified) working as an asssitant English teacher in a company in Sweden, and I am teaching English online...(this will be my first week) but was thinking to start teaching English in a solid company which has support, opportunity for growth, etc.

EF has a branch here in my country, so I thought if I can get in by starting to work in China, I had the chance to transfer here...I plan to get the TEFL this summer.

Because I have no experience making lesson-plans yet, I was hoping to start somewhere also that provides curriculum...someplace lik eEF or a language training center which does not suck my life dry...okay, maybe I am asking too much?

I read some horror stories about EF but that seems to be from some years ago. I wonder if they have changed over the years?

What did the OP decide??? Did they offer you a SINGLE apartment? I will not stay with anybody else.
The salary seems REALLY low...are the perks worth it? I am not sure now...
CAN ANYBODY SUGGEST US ANY OTHER COMPANIES LIKE EF WHICH GIVE SINGLE APARTMENT IN AN UNPOLLUTED LOCATION?
Thanks!
