And the grades aren't just a little low...they're VERY low
The university has told us that a certain number of students must pass all classes. There is a matrix which shows how many students they want to pass, get mid-range scores, etc. They don't like to fail students.
But...I have taught my classes, prepared my classes well, and done my job responsibly. I feel that I am a fair teacher, and have taken the time to grade all the exams fairly. However, it seems the students have not studied and prepared for the exam. In addition, they are not active during class, and many on them just diddle around on their phones.
What would you do? Would you trust your intuition and give them the grades you feel they deserve? Or would you "sell yourself out" and contribute to the assembly-line, where students don't have to work hard and just expect to pass everything?
After the school tells me that I should change the grades, and that the grades I give them aren't acceptable, I feel that I should leave the ball in their court.
Tell me your opinions... |

Your grades will be changed. Foreign teachers' classes are token gestures for the most part, yes there are exceptions, but I'm talking in generalizations.
You did your test, gave the grades you saw fit, and then submitted them. Nothing more you can do. |

Everyone passes.
No problems.
No need to rock the boat. |

The first time that I came across this, it annoyed me (and I teach at prrimary level).
I give honest grades and keep records. Admin asked me not to give the test papers back to the students if they get lower than a B-. I generally give them a second chance (re-test) anyway.
It's mainly a case of the parents causing uproar, ie. what's the point of having a FT if my Prince/Princess is getting poor grades!
With such young students it's not a big deal but I reckon it would frustrate me immensely at older levels! |

As others have pointed out, the school will very likely just change the grades anyway if you don't comply. My experience is that students in China expect very high grades in return for very little work, and that the schools not only allow that but support it. Chinese students must be seen to be achieving great scores, even if they really aren't. But then so much of what goes on here is facade with no underlying substance.
You either play the game and make whatever difference you can when you can, or you quit and find something else. |

Welcome to the People's Republic. This is the education system wise minds in the west wish to mimic, because Shanghai gets top results in the PISA test. The truth: mobile phone culture has all but drained waking consciousness from the youth of this country. It is the Matrix, the machines have won and being shown the red pill enrages them. So, do what the system insists upon. Keep feeding them blue pills. They are so delicious. |

Giving your students failing grades just gives the admin an opportunity to solicit bribes from your students.
I give passing grades to all my students. I do not want to waste time giving retests or giving my boss an opportunity to harass the students for bribes. |

I wouldn't worry. I have given oral tests to -primary- students and was told to give them the minimum pass mark even if they couldn't answer the question "what's your name"? or answer any question at all. Thankfully there are not that many.
The students are the ones that will suffer in later life if they are too lazy or not interested in the subjects they are supposedly being taught. |

From the evidence I have seen on CCTV's and web based observation cameras, this is the current trend in most places, just watched a big bike rally and the number of folks walking round with their beak buried in the screens was staggering .... I just read a paper on the addictive algorithms and the reward system built into the apps. |

If in my class everyone got awful grades I'm sure my boss would think, rather than passing them all, that I wasn't teaching properly / students weren't listening AND/OR they weren't studying at home. The passing issue is yet another reason I don't want to work in China. I don't mean this to sound superior, I'm just pointing out this. Where I work I would never ever in a million years be forced to change grades and even if they told me to do it I would refuse - I'm the one who controls the grades on the website we use. I don't think the system even allows anyone else to change them unless they find out my password. It must be a bit demoralising to have to deal with this, but I guess you get used to it.
In your uni, OP, what have you done to address the mobile phone issue in class? Or is this just trying to fight a battle you're always going to lose? |

I agree it's bad everywhere. But geez, it's just a huge problem here. WeChat is the big difference. It's now part of the collective mind here. I know of no other app that has a country by the bawlz the way WeChat has got China's... So many pics of other people's lunches to thumb through, so little time. |

You control your feed just like FB... so you see what you wanna see... photos of food.. may be your thing.. but it is the apps and the way they are designed that are the basis of the claims of addictive math. so doubt it has anything to do with ethnic origin.
Most of the job opps I see these days come in by FB or Weixin, with specialized groups for the purpose of employment searches.. even some groups that contain non native speakers searching for jobs.... I think the reason Weixin has saturated the market is it is all to everyone... and it is an inconvenience ..to ole' skool cash handling creatures like me .. heck I even had to give my insurance clerk cash and he had to pay my bike insurance cause PICC no longer accepted cash..
there is a guy who wrote a book on these algorithms .. there was a statement contained in one of the interviews I saw...In the US the average consumer of cell phone services will check their phone every 15 min's.... |

Of course like Baidu, youku etc. Wechat benefited from government support and the banning of all the non Chinese companies in that area too. |

Please provide evidential links to the US and multiple countries where FB is used. FB has many competitors, and is not so popular for millenials. There is no ban on competitors in my country, nor any government policy to contain them.
Besides, nobody uses FB the way Chinese use WeChat. It is quite different software. And almost nobody even uses their real name on WeChat. That tells you something about trust in this country. |
