Truth about the clothes. One of the benefits of the ubiquitous shopping malls are that you get name-brand clothes as opposed to the mystery meat often found in other places.
Oh and tailors. I got into a motorbike spill in Vietnam whilst wearing a shirt I had made in Saudi - one trip through the wash and you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference! |

I can't agree about the clothing and/or shoes.
These are imports, even with the same brand names for clothing and shoes, the quality DOES NOT compare to products in the USA.
Now maybe at higher end places, I do see beautiful clothes, but I don't know their quality. Even though I brought clothing in department stores, I can't say it is the same quaility--too many imports.
put them in the washer and they come out with a rip here and a rip there. |

Good point about the washer, in my last job we had a very cheap twin tub toploader. Everybody complained that their clothes were getting mangled, and the company went out and bought some nice new Samsung front loaders. Problem solved.
Bought our own washing machine for where I am now because the company provided one was an antique. Again no problems.
And I should know, my wife could spend hours shopping in the malls for clothes. If there were clothes problems regarding the washer, I would soon know about it!!!! |

The washer that was in company provided housing at my old Riyadh job used to eat clothing....in a traditionally ancient method of days gone by... |

A washing machine ? get your clothes laundered. 2 SAR a time ! As for clothes the smart thing in KSA is to get a tailor to make things for you. Shirts and trousers. Cheaper AND better than off-the-peg in the malls or the souqs. |

This bloke is a gulf veteran. Get your pants and dog dirt washed and pressed, even your tie, for the first day back after the weekend. Everything else can be washed at home. If sowdy is anything like Oman, there must be a friendly laundry proprietor from the sub-continent somewhere near a FT's digs, even if it involves a bit of knee grease? |

I dunno. Your choice of shoe shop?
I've probably bought...something like 6 pairs of shoes here. Zero problems.
Along with affordable tailors & laundry services I'll add; cobblers, mending clothing and watch repairmen. All conveniently available and dirt cheap.

True, but nevertheless a phrase that may be easily misconstrued. |

Hello all,
I am having my stuff shipped over the bridge from my old place in Bahrain to a new post in Riyadh, and I am wondering if I'm going to have problems with:
Sports equipment (Badminton gear, dumbells)
Musical Instruments (electric guitar, 88 key keyboard, 1 mic + stand)
Marriage guidance books (recently married, my wife and I like to read)
DSLR camera
Sega Dreamcast
Anyone have any experience with getting these into KSA? |

No worries. Customs would think they're children's books. |

Customs is much more lax now - especially crossing the causeway from Bahrain. If they search they might think your marriage guidance books are pornographic. |

Brewer's Yeast? Must've been ordered in error, I found nutmeg powder for sale in Tamimi for a short while. I doubt it'll be available again any time soon.I believe it's on the list of banned substances, not so sure yeast is.. |

Better to go somewhere else if you need regular supplies of beverage alcohol. |
