|
|
Hello,
I have an offer for a Uni job, 18 hrs a week, all amenities paid (flight, medical, housing) paying 9,000 yuan/month. Can a person live/save on this salary in Qingdao?
Thank you!

Yes. And that salary sounds pretty good for a uni.
Are there any extra office hours or anything?
Qingdao is great. I'll probably live there in future. |

no office hours. Do you know if there is a large expat community there? |

There is, there is also a lot of Koreans too.
Also, the one problem I foresee is that you may well be out in the sticks, i.e. not much to do and see, and a long bus journey from the centre of the city.
Although one good thing if you're not too far away is that you could well make another 10,000+ doing part time work, maybe 10 or 15 hours a week. |

Great info...yes the school seems to be a bit far from center city..Shandong Foreign Trade Vocational College. I assume they have didi there?
Not sure about part-time jobs...I will be a subject teacher, not ESL. |

Maybe one of the new subway lines will extend there? I think only one line is open right now, but more are on the way. |

18 teaching hours sounds quite high.. Is that the norm now in China? It used to be around 12, I thought. |

If you're not doing Oral FT work then prep and marking will be additional time.
Salary offered is certainly better than FT rate which would be closer to 6K and 16 contact hours.
If you are certificated and registered in your home country and have classroom exp than the rate is way under.
Coastal is better in QD as you the early afternoon sea breeze in summer.
OP school is coastal. |

Not sure as this is all new to me. To be fair I was offered 8500 for 16hrs or 9000 for 18hrs. |

The SAFEA standard contract provides for a maximum of 20 hours contact time pw.
Mostly it pans out at 14 or 16.
I've done 18 in short bursts to cover for other FT absences. |

I spent some time there last Summer. I was well impressed! Fresh air, wonderful coastal walks, brewery fresh quality beer everywhere, fantastic seafood...
The people were also among the friendliest that I've met in China. GL |

I'd agree about friendliness. It's partly the profile of the Olympics (sailing), partly the olde worlde German heritage at least at the station end.
I was the solitary laowai at a hotel Christmas Eve bash. I was treated like the favorite son. |

For a Chinese university, the salary is pretty standard. You could save maybe half your salary - it is possible to live on 1000 RMB a week no problem.
And in my opinion, Qingdao is one of the best Chinese cities as far as air quality goes. It is by the sea. I enjoyed walking along the seafront when I lived there. |
