I am interested in teaching in Zhuhai, in southern China next to Macau. I have a couple of questions. First, what are the best universities for prospective EFL teachers there?(I have extensive experience, outside of China.) I am interested in teaching young adults at a university, or possibly a language institute. Second, is it easy to travel from Zhuhai to Macau on the weekend?(My nationality is American, if that matters.) Thanks in advance for your responses.

Difficult to answer the first question since I've only ever worked for one uni in Zhuhai but anecdotally... First of all most of the universities in Zhuhai are in Tangjia, which is in the north of the city. Some people consider it too far from the main part of the city, where most of the expats live. In fact there are four large universities and an International school there, so there's a thriving expat community in Tangjia itself. Also it's not all that difficult to travel to other parts of the city from there. There are three other universities or colleges that I know of . Jinan university is in the middle of the city, but has a very small campus and currently has no teacher vacancies. Jilin university and Zunyi medical college both hire foreign teachers, but both are out near the airport and therefore a very long way from the city itself. There is a list of univerisites and other schools here http://www.airshow.com.cn/en/zhuhai/ScienceAndEducatio/2005-07-22/171.html but I don't know how up to date it is.

UIC has a very good reputation for standards of teaching and treatment of staff, but it has a very high workload. It's new campus is also quite remote compared to the old one. BNU has a mixed reputation, which seems to have slipped in recent years due to a change of the FAO there. BIT I have no information about, and Zhongshan university also had a very good reputation but recently I heard they had moved almost all of their English teachers to their Guangdong campus, again due to a change in administration. I stress again though, most of my information is anecdotal, based on what I have heard from teachers working at these places or from people posting on Dave's, so check it out for yourself.

As to travelling to Macau on the weekends. I personally have only ever been to Macau once on a weekend, and would never do it again. I go on weekdays, and that's crowded and busy enough for me. The weekends in Macau are horrible. It's easy enough to get there though. From Tangjia you could take the high speed train, there's a station near the BNU and BIT campuses and that would take you right to the border with Macau. Or you could take a bus, possibly two, I don't know all the routes from Tangjia. From there you just walk through the border crossing and you're in Macau. If you are going to do that, register your passport for the E-Channel. There's an office at the border where you just fill in a form and twenty four hours later you can use the E-Channel where you put your passport on the scanner, press your thumb on the reader and your through. It takes five to ten minutes tops, compared to the hour or more it can take to get through the regular channel. You must have a resident permit with at least six months left on to qualify though.
