I did read a comment that said uni jobs pay $5K. I think that has gone up by a few thousand but it would stand to reason that folks can live okay on about $5K-$6K outside of the capital or a place like Shanghai. They may not save much but can again live on that salary.

Point me towards those job ads haha!
5,000 USD month?? For university teaching?! What planet are those people on. |

^^^Haha, I think that meant 5,000RMB (1 RMB for each year of glorious history!) and not $5K--I think "$5K" is a misnomer in this case.
...but agreed, if in fact $5K for a teaching job in Our China (after taxes! not before!) then point me that way too, cuz my hands will be outta my pockets and outstretched...gimme summa dat dosh!

| Yep I mean 5000 RMB. That is what some uni jobs pay but many are higher. I guess my point is that folks should be able to live on 6000-7000 per month just for spending (not saving) and outside of the big cities. But I am basing this on my experience a few years ago. |

As far as cost of living, things are getting more expensive. Not crazy expensive, but, for example, to get the food for my family to eat today cost 48 RMB at the marked. Same would have cost under 20 a few years ago. So, more than double.
Thanks for the well wishes twowheel |

Congrats! But as this is a cost of living thread I feel obliged to point out that although USD 5K / month is an excellent salary, exactly how excellent it is would depend on where you are. USD 5K would go much further in a lower tier city or the countryside than in the centre of a Tier 1.
For example, USD 5K / month would be a decent income in Hong Kong, but far from exceptional. |

Very true. I would not say exceptional, but it is a much better rate than what I have gotten in the past. It is easy to waste money here. I have a wife and a son, so I try to be frugal.
BTW, not Shanghai or Beijing, or any other first tier city.
Back to OP, would depend on costs, existing or presenting themselves. Provided housing is usually for a bachelor who has no intention to marry. Meaning it sucks. Food is cheap, but you need to learn where/how. |

T1 city (the big cities): 5k per month minimum if you're living like a pauper, 10k+ if you enjoy eating out and going for beers and eating food that makes you full after eating it. Going out with other foreigners for a night on the town a few times a month is expensive (talking 500-1000 RMB per night).
T2 city (medium-sized ones): 2-3k per month if you're eating like a local and/or cook for yourself all the time which is boring. I know there are people that do it but the ingredients here are so poor that all you can eat is rice with veggies and "meat" a.k.a. something that resembles stringy wolf meat. If you want to enjoy a pizza/go out on the town once a few times a week it will cost you closer to 10k per month. Heck, even taking my wife out for hotpot costs 200-500 RMB per visit. Chinese food ain't that cheap if you want to avoid getting anal leakage.
T3 city (villages/"cities" outside of medium ones): I highly recommend not living in one of those places as you get overwhelmed regularly by the locals who have never seen a foreign person before. Cost of living can be as low as like 1k a month if you eat like a local and stick to drinking 3rmb beers from the mom and pop shops. Lots of savings here but even here in Chengdu I kill the amount that people can save there. Avoid unless desperate! I know people who live cheaply there and still only save a little bit, it is not worth it. The economy in those places never grows. The central government lobs all their money at the big cities. |
You can eat cheap (street food) for a while but if you're staying any significant amount of time this gets very boring and very unhealthy!
To add to Markness' post - In my experience living in SH, the biggest expense by far is going out for Western meals and drinks at the expat haunts.
3-4k / month = living a very frugal existence.
6k / month = nice lifestyle but cutting out the mad nights out.
8k / month = nice lifestyle with a few nights out.
10k / month = very nice lifestyle with a good night out every weekend.
If I'm a little careful with my money I can live very well and enjoy eating out and a few drinks here and there on 6k/month. In my first year in SH this was not the case, definitely needed 8k+/month for the same lifestyle.
I'd also agree with markness about the lower Tier 'cities'. I would hate to live there but fair play to those that do make a go of it and even enjoy it. GL! |

| So it sounds like you can live fairly well in one of the most expensive cities on a spending budget of 8000-10000 RMB per month. That sounds reasonable to me. I would suggest a lower budget is workable in a less expensive city without having to live too frugally and enjoy life without much financial stress. If one wanted to save and not live too much on the cheap, then obviously they need to earn north of 8000-10000 after tax depending on the city. |
