As for the isolation, village life etc. welcome to China. The pics you posted were carbon copies of any number of schools outside a major city.
However, your criticism of the apartment was a bit too much for me. It looked like you had a normal Western style mattress instead of the customary wooden "mattress". I didn't see any rats nor any squat toilets. The walls and floor seemed hole free. You had your own kitchen instead of the usual communal on-campus one. You used the word "quiet" to describe it. In 6 years of teaching in China, I never ever experienced a quiet apartment. The washers looked fairly operable as well. |

Even with the overall negative tone of my review, I don't feel I was overly critical of the quality of the apartment. I touched on the remote location and the fact that the room is totally bare when you arrive. This certainly is not the case when the previous teacher moves out but then the cleaners take anything useful or valuable left behind. It would help to have a cup, some cutlery and a few other things to help make the first day or two a bit easier.
There's no denying that staff entrance to the school is a bit grim but the accommodation itself is fine even if it is a little small.
My new apartment is off campus in a residential area and I understand what you mean about the noise. If it isn't kids screaming and crying then its old men shouting into their cellphone and setting off firecrackers at 7am. My earplugs are the best thing I've bought since moving into my new place.
I do a job where I'm paid enough to make sure I never have to live in a place with rats or squat toilets. I didn't move overseas to live in poorer conditions than I would in my home country. I'd leave a job immediately if that were the case. |
