This is a guide to help new/newer/desperate people who might be thinking of working for proven exploiters in Japan. No trolling please or throwing out assertions w/out giving some explanations. Let's keep it helpful.
Disclaimer - I aint ever worked for these schools, but I have heard enough firsthand accounts from people who got burned. Badly. And in today's economic climate and the race to the bottom for English teacher recruiting in Japan, the rotten employers are still rotten. The newer ones have no shame, too.
Nichibei - Anything with that in the name. I've seen their contract courtesy of a friend. My advice to any teacher or would be teacher who sees a contract that says you can't work in the same area for a time limit if you leave this school - tear it up before you even sign it. That's ILLEGAL. If anybody hears that bullshiz from them, refer them to the Labor Board.
GABA - Doesn't pay transportation and doesn't guarantee a minimum no. of hours. Sure, some people are fine with the risky nature of the work but make sure you understand there's a reasonable chance you won't earn enough to make a living.
English Village - Its advertising promises a good to very good salary in today's Japan for full time teachers. Hold on buddy - again there's no base income. You only get paid for what you do and that depends on a customer choosing you.
This school changed hands last year and proceeded to tear up whatever benefits the old owner gave, and from what I've heard the attitude at the top stinks.
One of my friends worked there for a long time under the old owner and decided the pay wasn't good enough for the bullshiz under the new owner. Teachers and staff quitting since the takevoer says something.
Over to you all. |

Which Nichibei do you mean? The one in Yotsuya, or the one based in Kansai? |

Interesting. And I guess times change.
I was full time at ICU about '85-'87 and had one evening a week at Nichibei in Yostuya. It was a plum job, well over ¥20k for one class (more like a big lecture). |
