First impressions of Yangzhou - seems to be quite a gritty city, reminds me of the first city I lived in in China - Quanzhou, Fujian.
There is a mad excess of e-bikes, all hooting (I hate hooting, and noise in general).
Strangely, I'm getting less hardcore stares, if any at all, than in Hangzhou (supposedly a more "worldly, cosmopolitan" city).
Lots of pretty girls, but they're everywhere in China.
So, let's rank cities I've lived in, from most livable to least:
1. Xiamen - beaches, mountains, cleanish air, proximity to HK and SEA (cheap flights to the Philippines), friendly people, Xiamen Uni, if you like uni girls, ability to save.
2. Shanghai - convenient and modern, open minded girls, ability to save.
3, 4 - Quanzhou, Yangzhou - not 1st tier cities, but not boondock cities either, noisy, a bit rough around the edges, ability to save, no direct flights to Asian or international destinations, no metro.
Hangzhou - didn't spend enough time to properly judge it, but felt like I was getting a lot of less-than-friendly stares from the males.
Let's see, I start teaching tomorrow, and the job could make or break my relatively neutral opinion of Yangzhou. |

I actually had a long reply typed out that failed to send. In it, I mentioned e-bikes. A scourge on the city no doubt. I can see why they're so popular though in a smallish city with no metro and wide roads. I'm afraid it's one of those 'if you can't beat them, join them' kind of situations. Often hear about plans to regulate them but they're a law unto themselves, totally immune from the rules of the road as far as I can tell.
Then they honk, like you said, when they're coming towards me from behind. How about just don't drive into me!? If you honk I'm more likely to move off my course. |

| UPDATE: Yangzhou is proving to be a very chill little city - none of the big city rush vibes, friendly locals, great food and workable students. Air quality reasonable, pretty girls, (free) accommodation comfortable. Really no complaints at this stage. |

| Glad you are enjoying it. If you make it over to Wuxi let me know and we can grab a beer or something. |

Went to Ronnies Bar last night - awesome pies, great crowd.
Will come on over to Wuxi in the coming months - got a couch/spare bed for me to surf? |
