Hello everyone!

I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with the company English Academy for Children in Ibaraki Prefecture. Any information is appreciated.

Also. Do most companies require original copies of your degrees or certificates for the COE?

Can you drive? Sometimes work in Ibaraki means having to drive to work, as taking the train or a bus is not convenient.

Thanks for the response. I have a license so that shouldn't be a problem. It sounds like the company provides company vehicles. Have you worked in Ibaraki before? Have you heard of E.A.C.?

No, just worked with an Australian who had lived there for years. Having a Japanese driver's license is needed, as he said.

I don't know about the company, sorry, but can confirm that they will need your original degree certificate for your visa application - immigration will expect to see it.

So immigration doesn't accept scanned copies that have been signed by a notary (I think the term in the US is apostilled)?

For an application for a certificate of eligibility for the Specialist in Humanities visa (the most common visa for English teachers) the MoJ website asks for the following:

1. Copies of the company registration and a statement of profit and loss of the recipient organization.
2. Materials showing the business substance of the recipient organization.
3. A diploma or certificate of graduation with a major in the subject regarding the activity of the person concerned, and documents certifying his or her professional career.
4. Documents certifying the activity, the duration, position and the remuneration of the person concerned.

So it's #3 you have to worry about and as you can see, they ask for the originals. Now you may get an official who will accept a notarised copy but then again you may not (you'd have thought there would be rules about this sort of thing and there is, but it's only 1 rule and it says an official can ask when whatever they want. Very helpful!).

So I would expect the school to say, 'send us the original' - I work in HR for an international school and we ask for originals, it's just easier and saves time overall. We send everything by Fedex or DHL so can track items in case they go missing, you could do the same so you know they receive yours.

Thanks for the advice. I guess there is no way around it. Now to figure out a way to send my degree without it being damaging en route - perhaps a tube would be my best option.
