Hola!

I have decided to try to go on a diet. I went to the local pharmacy and told them my need, and they sold me some medicine (its not dexatrim). Iwent home and got on the internet to do some research and found out that in the US, I needed a perscription to buy this stuff. Not here in China.

So my question is, what other kinds of medicine can one buy "over the counter" here? Can one buy valium or anything else that will cure pain?

Interested.

My wife has a friend in Beijing who can send her anything she wants from valium to zanax to viagra, (which by the way I do not yet need) and there is no doctor involved. Sleeping medecine, pain medecine, diet pills, you name it and she can have it any time she wants. Her friend just puts it in express mail.

I once asked why she does not just get it here in Shanghai and she said it is not available locally.

????????????

Guanxi??????????

How to figure? Sorry I can not be of any more serious help.

Baijiu will cure whatever ails you.

One can also buy antibiotics without a prescription. But I would be wary. I saw some boxes going for as little as 3 kuai a box in Nanning last year. Bug resistance starts right there.

I have too much free time.

Hey guys!

The song 'You can get anything you want at Alice's Restuarant' must have been penned with Shantou in mind. S'true. I use Chinese herbal medicine and one time when I went to pick some up the 'pharmacist' noted that some of the ingredients were to help me sleep. He threw in a pack of 30 valium for free. Great gift. I passed them on to another FT who likes the crunchy texture.

Never seen a real prescription for western medicine since I've been here.

I was once sitting in a female CHinese medicine doctor's office when a male patient entered the premises.
The doctor listened him out, then charged him a hefty price and handed him a package of medicine with the HOFFMANN LaRoche or PFIZER label on it (I forgot which brand it was).
She unpacked the tablets in front of the man so he could count them. Meanwhile I pocketed the English-language instructions for use (the man could not read English anyway).

I later gleaned from that piece of paper that it was a dedicated anti-gonorrhea medication.
I asked the doctor why she had not examined her patient.
She said she never did that because that man had had the same problem several times before, and each time the medication had helped him!

Blue pills and Jim Beam. Much more effective. All problems float away. But you can't get Jim beam over the counter here.

Here is my impersonation of Dragon.

O great arioch36 please tell us more about the blue pills and Jim Beam. We lowly teachers are not worthy of your great thoughts but we humbly ask your help. Where can we obtain this Jim Beam you speak of?? Please tell us where you work so we may join you in your crusade against stupidity and sobriety in this great land. O may you live in interesting times and where might we obtain chairman arioch36 cigarette lighters.

Not bad but I promise not to do it again.

Okay, yesterday I suggested that Arioch36 should change his call sign to Ground Zero. My sound advice, based on one his earlier interminable ramblings, went unheeded. Friends rarely listen to friends. Crying or Very sad

Now he's got this new avatar, which in my humble opinion blows chunks! Confused But what do you think, my illustrious comrades in ESL?

Should Ground Zero be his new call sign? I believe so. Then we would all know exactly where the target is. Better aim and all that. Cool

Do you, being the reasonable, informed, and highly intelligent folk I know you to be (okay, I'll stop sucking up now) believe, as I do, that his new avatar is crap? Take a look at it - if you have a strong stomach. Personally, I think posting his own facial profile is a bit over the top, although the hair lice visible at the top of his head are a welcome distraction. Very Happy

DISCLAIMER:

Chris and I are in fact friends - although I'll wait for his reaction to this post before I claim that we still are! This post is not, in any way (well, okay, in some some way) designed to be a flame. Just earthy boyish humour in a world gone mad. Moderators, please remain at DefCon2.

Mate. Mate! Get a grip and change that dodgey avatar! Talk to Seth. His 'Mr Bean' was the only reason I came here back in the bad old days when the forum was alive with flames. Now he's got the catburger thing, which is still pretty good. And mine? Every time I try to post it it comes out as a huge 'beep'. Wink

In conclusion and to present my final argument on why Ground Zero is an appropriate moniker, Arioch36akaGroundZero is, as is well known to daily surfers, Chris. What you didn't know is that his real identity and full name is Chris P. Critter. Which is what you would be if you were at Ground Zero.
