How can I get a student visa?
Found more work, no problem. Gonna throw a curve and take on part-times.
Fortigurn was right. "Who didn't see this coming?"
Plenty of jobs out there "Forty." |

That school and job went out the window. I'm thinking about being a student here now, getting a student visa. This sounds so complicated though, I may just look for another school to give me a permit. |

How'd you manage this Forty? Get one to give you a permit and then squeeze in the others, or did you tell them you had other jobs? |

This is too complicated. I'm here on a visitor's visa and it lasts only 30 days. What should I do? Still enroll? |

If you're here on a 30 day visa, and don't have a job, a trip is coming up for you in the very near future. You would pretty much have to go on one anyway. Even if you got a school to apply for an ARC, there wouldn't be enough time for the paper work. You should have gotten a 60 day, extendable visa. 30 day visas aren't extendable, so taking a course won't help until you get back from your trip with the right type of visa.
You should drop by a language center to discuss your situation and options further. |

One is sponsoring my ARC (which I don't have yet, and thanks to the red tape in this country I will now have to make a second visa run). The other two are informal jobs, part time casual. |

And don't expect that even 60 days will be enough. I've been here for 2 months, and I'm having to make a second visa run. |

There are no 'student visas' for Taiwan. |

Actually there are. The problem is that you have to apply for the visa before you come to Taiwan and the TECO offices have little to no idea how to run the paper work so they tell you.
"There are no 'student visas' for Taiwan."
A little guanxi goes a long way in these matters or you could try agitating your way to success but it is a refined skill.
The local government here recently passed a rather large scholarship program for foreigners with the right connections who want to come and study at Taiwan's universities, however few people if any in the government of the Republic of China know how or what visa's to issue to these students. |

If you enroll in a reputable program--Shida, Zhengda, Wenhua, (all in Taipei) etc--the visa isn't a real problem. Tuition is, however, more expensive than schools which exist solely for the purpose of extending visas. If you really want to learn Chinese then I would recommend enrolling in a real school. The ones I listed above are all good places to learn Chinese. If you do so, then any work you do will be illegal as you are relying on the school to ensure your stay in Taiwan. Even so, work is generally easy to find and some schools will appreciate the fact that they don't have to sponsor you and can continue doing things illegally. |
