I think it's a horribly tasteless joke to juxtapose Osama Bin Ladin to a personal wanted commercial, and it's at least as bad to try to "entertain" us on this board with this unspeakably indecent nonsense! |

I've always thought a leeetle sex-change on OBL, followed by a life of exile in Afghanistan would be lovely.

Is it just me, or do we always think the same? I always wondered how Mr. Bin Laden would feel should he have to endure even half of what these women must endure.
It should be pointed out however, that there are some women who are so hideous that hey actually NEED to be Taliban to protect our eyes. |

Roger, I couldn't agree more:
This is exemplary of the tasteless, shameful racism that now pervades, and more worringly, is accepted in good humour throughout the 'western' world following September 11th. This is highly offensive and has not even a tenuous relation to TEFL.

Ahhhh, c'mon folks....give poor ole ludwig a break. He spends hours and hours on the Internet discovering these "gems" for us. Look at how many different avatars he has had this week alone!! I would say the current one is a duck or a rabbit, but it will surely change tonight.
The nightlife in HongKong must REALLY suck!! |

"Great Minds Think Alike": more like racially-bigoted ones! |
If you believe that this is racism, then I don't believe you know what racism is. The Taliban is not a race - it's an oppressive political regime. At very worst this is sophomoric attempt at humour that may be offensive to the women victimized by the Taliban. Unfortunately, I doubt that any such women read this board, so we can't get their opinions. Even though the humor is tasteless, in a way it does make a statement. The fact that all the women's faces are hidden and the occupation, income, and hobbies are all "Not allowed" says something to me. I'm not sure how the women victimized by the Taliban would feel about it.
What I believe now pervades, and more worringly, is accepted throughout the 'western' world is the ease by which we label things "racism" and people "racially-bigoted". Personally, I believe you owe the poster an apology for this. (And the poster probably owes an apology to any women victimized by the Taliban whom he may have offended, if any happen to read this board.) If you're afraid to make any type of statement (even an immature attempt at humour) because somebody may stick you with the label "racially-bigoted", then you're going to miss out on some important discourse. I couple days ago I read the book Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, and he also makes this point, especially in the Q & A that follows the novel. You may want to read it.
I think this thread could in fact be very relevant to ESL if it really ponders the question, "What is racism?" I think it's sure a lot more relevant than the countless, boring Western men/Asian women threads. |

Look, guys who have elected to disagree with me and my camp, i am not discussing with any of you whether this "amusing piece" is an illustraztion of the rampant racism prevalent in some quarters; I didn't call it that way anyway.
but it is a pathetic piece of entertainment for those who know how to enjoy their own safety while they watch others being beheaded, sexually exploited, gtunned down or whatever;
whilst it may not be truly "racist" it surely is stereotyping and negatively profiling.
What uproar would Ludwig have created had he used the logo of the U.S. American Democratic Party ... |

Agreed: the Taliban is NOT a race; but this post is not just mocking the Taliban, it projects onto ALL Muslim races! "Occupation/Income/Hobbies: Not allowed": surely you can't be dense enough to believe that this isn't aimed at the MUSLIM culture per se. And in the same vain, "Make me 1 of your wives" alongside "NO MORE BEATINGS, PLEASE". It is clearly using the moral high ground against the Taliban to project onto Muslims, which, in my opinion, is unwarranted and highly offensive.

That's your opinion, and you're welcome to it. I believe the opposite is true: I think if we identified/labelled MORE genuine acts of racism then we'd raise awareness to the issue. Really, looking at that web page, how far have we come since 'The Minstrels'? If you GENUINELY do NOT believe this is racism then YOU are one of the people that need to be made aware of what it is (my guess is that you actually found this humorous and are subsequently ashamed to admit that it's racially obscene in nature).
