Has anyone read this book by Steven Kinzer? I thought it was really good. I thought it was a very informative book. Although I have not yet lived in Turkey, I have closely followed both Turkish news and international media's coverage of Turkey. This book reinforced a lot of the conclusions I had made after trying to find the truth somewhere between those two and in talking to my Turkish friends.

I should add that my Turkish friends (in general) thought it was very good...so it must be at least fair? maybe even accurate? Any thoughts, agreements, disagreements, from those that have read it? Strong recommendation to those that haven't.

I've heard the same actually. My brother did his PhD research here in Istanbul and I know it was one of the books on his shelf. There's a book by Eric Zurcher (maybe Erik, I don't have it in front of me right now) called "Turkey: A Modern History". It's quite a good one too. The first chapter is a little slow, but it gives a great history of the country and the mentality behind the construction and shift of the country from the Ottomans to the Republic.

Hi All

Heres another one you may want to look at ,just out this year written by a French Canadian lady by the name of Hugette Eyuboglu.
It really is the memoirs of a foreign bride in Turkey who still remains married to the same man after 42 years, 37 of those years were spent in Turkey.
An amazing insight into the country since the early sixties which looks into most of the social aspects of life here especially that relating to problems for foreign "spouses" both male or female ,so if you intend tying the knot read this first .
A couple of useful websites about books on Turkey are included so here they are yours for free ; www.citlembik.com.tr and www.nettleberry.com
happy reading .
