Has anyone heard anything about this area of China?
Zhuzhou, Hunan province
Any feedback? I have just been offered a job there...
This is the contract:
College - RMB4,000 airticket&travel&medical allowance/accommodation
How's life in Sichuan? Is it better to teach in a University rather than a Middle School?
Thanks! |

ah...zhuzhou....part of the changsha, xiangtan, zhuzhou tricity area in Hunan Province. 4,000 a month sounds pretty standard for Hunan Province. While it does have it's charm, you might be bit put off by the amenities of the city. It does have a mcdonalds and a kfc, if that is a mesurement of a chinese city. There's the typical pollution, spitting and bad weather that is also pretty typical of Hunan province. Outside of the city though, you can make some easy trips out to the country side....if villager watching is your thing....oh, by the way, zhuzhou is the clothing factory outlet center of Hunan Province....all the locals go to the undergrounds shops in zhuzhou to buy clothes (underground not being illegal, literealy underground) anyway....so do you like spicey food? As for sichuan, the food is much worse than in Hunan...but it may be a bit cleaner... |

I hope you never accepted a job at Nanfang Middle/High School in Zhuzhou. It sucks bigtime, and there's this person named Ms. Violet who has a penchant for very unpleasant surprises for foreign teachers. If it's any indication, foreign teachers don't stay long at Nanfang, as opposed to No.2 Middle School and Go Front Middle School, where the foreign teachers renew their contracts frequently.
NEVER ACCEPT AN OFFER FROM NANFANG HIGH SCHOOL!!!!!!! |

I picked Zhuzhou, Hunan....
Don't worry roundabout.....lol. I didn't! It's at a Teacher's College in Zhuzhou (although I know nothing about it). It seems you've been there, have you heard about the college or can you tell me about Hunan?
Much appreciated. |

Personally I like Hunan, having taught in Changsha. In proportion to its population, it does lag economically. Spicy food. The western part of the province, where lies the scenic area Zhangjiajie, is extremely poor. Foreigners are relatively few, so get used to that. Mao Zedong and many other leaders of the Communist revolution called Hunan home. The ancestral home of Mao in Shaoshan, not far from Xiangtan, is maintained as a shrine to his memory. Fairly miserable climate, with hot, humid summers and winters chilly enough for longhandles, but virtually no spring or fall. The local Hunan dialect is spoken, of course, but everyone also speaks Mandarin. I am re-reading this and wondering exactly why I said I like Hunan. I guess Hunan is typically Chinese, and if you like China, then you will like Hunan. |

No spring or fall....man, those are my favourite months!! I hope winter isn't as long and cold as the winters here in Canada. I might have a serious problem then....
Spicey food I can handle
So if anyone is in Hunan, look me up!! Haha. |

Zhuzhou is a small city with very little Western influence. I think the Teachers College is ok, just beware not to teach in middle schools because most students don't take oral English class seriously. |

I taught in ZhuZhou, not so exciting, I have taught in places I liked better. There is alot of pollution there. Go Front School, treats their teachers OK but they have trouble getting proper working papers for their teachers. |

I worked in Zhuzhou from 2002 to 2004 and I loved it. The school were I worked was great, they treated me well and to tell the truth I miss them. I highly recomend Zhuzhou Institute of Technology. If you are offered work there take it, you will not regret it. |

Nanfang High School in Zhuzhou has not ceased spreading its gross immorality, and nauseatingly unethical culture. For some strange and illicit reason, this new woman, Ms. Gong, refuses to issue a release letter to me stating that I don't work in that school anymore. She claims I have to "surrender" my resident card to her first. Nonsense. According to my high-ranking Zhuzhou PSB official friend, he will take care of stamping my card, and sees no valid reason why that letter should be withheld from me. Looks like "LOW I.Q." and "Scumbags" should be the name of that school for obvious reasons! |

Relocating from the minefields...err: coalmines of Shanxi, Zhuzhou is no doubt a better option. But if you had any choice, you would go somewhere else. It's a nondescript town, relatively poor and totally off the beaten tracks. |

This Ms. Gong just told a teacher at Nanfang that I was the "most terrible foreign teacher." Yah right! I was awarded the "Lotus Award," Hunan province's most prestigious award for the best foreign teachers. Take that!!! |
