Ok, so i have been coming to this forum for long enough to know what most people here think of EF. Although it does seem to me that most of the anger and dissent towards them comes from badly managed schools and poor quality DOS.
My qeustion is what is your opinion of thier teaching materials and thier teaching support network.
The reason i am asking is that my school is probably going to strike some sort of partnership with them. My school is a normal chinese elementary and secondry school that is wishing to upgrade its English department to work as a full blown language centre. And for this they want to use EFs assistance. Although EF will have no part in the running of this centre, it will still be managed by the present international department directer.
So EF teaching material, Good, Bad or Indifferent. Your opinions would be gratefully recieved.
Thanks |

EF only have books; EF books at that. They are as dry as the desert. They are also - in the main - written by non-native speakers. |

Not quite correct. EF's books for their adult classes are written and published by its staff in Massachussets, USA. EF uses Brainwaves and New English Parade - both series published in Britain - for its kids' classes. |

Oh! I see! Because the books YOU use are thus, you think ALL are? Interesting conclusion....So you think those boy meets girl type story in the EF books is used in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia? Most people around the world use EF books written especially for that particular market/religious beliefs/laws, etc.
Get your facts straight before commenting on stufff you know NOTHING about. |
My, my! Aren't we sensitive.
Pardon me for making the assumption that we were discussing EF in China and not the entire world. This IS the China discussion forum, isn't it?
My information came from an EF school in China. No, I do not have first-hand knowledge of what EF schools in Saudi Arabi use. But that's not really important, is it? Noodles was talking about her/his school in China, not Saudi Arabia. Anyway, my info from EF in China is that the EF books are used worldwide. If you examine the EF textbooks that I have seen, you will find that they are written entirely in English, with no references to the local country or language. The topics used (such as the girl-meets-boy scenario you mentioned) are based on western culture, with an American flavor, and definitely not Chinese. This makes sense because presenting the culture of Eng speaking countries is important in ESL. These textbooks have not been localized for China or the Chinese culture. The preface and the notes in the back of the book state that comments should be sent to the authors at the US office.
But if what you say is true, then I stand corrected. Perhaps we are looking at different EF books?
BTW, what EF school in Saudi Arabia did you teach at? |
