|
|
Since the USA JET interviews are in two weeks I thought I should ask for some advice. I feel confident with the body of the interview, but I have a few trivial but lingering questions:
1. Will bowing with a "Shitsuree shimasu!" get me points, or ill I just look like a looney?
2. Do the interviewers ever ask for a short sample lesson? If so, I would appreciate any suggestions.
3. Will a sportcoat, slacks, white shirt, and a tie be formal enough, or do I need a suit?
4. What percentage of interviewees get accepted to the JET Program?
Thanks for indulging me. I would appreciate any information you may have.

I assume you all know what I meant to have in front of the "shimasu" was part of the "excuse me" phrase, not profanity directed at my interviewers.

You'll look like a total loon. Even if going for a CIR interview, you'd look silly.

There's been a lot of discussion about this on some websites dedicated towards JET people - the concensus is that for the US interviews a suit is needed. (Which I've always thought weird, because the people, once they get over here, are always the worst and sloppiest dressed people on the programme).

This varies from year to year - the number of people leaving, the expansion or contraction of the programme, the spaces alloted to each Consulate to fill (which is partially affected by the quality of people they've sent in the past) etc., etc.
However, this year, you can expect the numbers to be lower - more people from outside the US are being taken (I won't go into why) and the number of places outright is dropping, so getting in will be harder.

If you don't mind I am interested as to why less Americans are being accepted. Also, I am confused why positions are dropping with the government's push towards having more foreigner teachers in the coming years. |

I'd imagine that the numbers are dropping because of contracting companies filling the slots instead of JET.
I too am interested in why there may be less Americans offered jobs than in previous years. G Cthulhu, can you explain a bit? |

Unless there is someone there from Japan, you don't even need to do that.
2. Do the interviewers ever ask for a short sample lesson? If so, I would appreciate any suggestions.
No. You will probably be asked a weird or off-tangent question as if some google-eyed students would, be given a minute to think of an appropriate answer, then be given a note pad to substitute for a blackboard (if you want to use it), and 30 seconds for your answer. They want to see how you would respond if students ask you things not related to grammar.
3. Will a sportcoat, slacks, white shirt, and a tie be formal enough, or do I need a suit?
Wear a suit. It's like any professional job interview.
4. What percentage of interviewees get accepted to the JET Program?
Only JET knows this, and they aren't telling. What does it matter anyway? Just interview as best you can. |
