I have a B.S. in environmental science and I am finishing up a M.S. in Geography (physical geography - not cartography as most people think) and I am looking into teaching abroad opportunities. So far the JET program, teaching English, is on the top of my list. I would love to teach science, but I know of no programs similar to JET that focus on science education. I've looked into some international schools, but they almost all require teaching experience (of which I have none). I am also looking for a program that can employ me and a significant other. Anyone have any suggestions or advice? |

JET has absolutely nothing to do with teaching geography, except maybe on a rudimentary "here is a cutout outline of country X". Unless you are fluent in Japanese, I also think you are overestimating the ability of the kids to grasp a proper lesson on physical geography.
While I'd never tell anyone not to apply, since JET normally goes for the "well-rounded generalist", your highly intensive study (masters are somewhat unusual for applicants on JET) in a small area may well count against you in an application. |

Yes, I understand that JET has nothing to do with geography. I would want to do JET to teach English. I understand that my degrees bear almost no meaning to the JET program (except the requirement of having at least a B.A.). I was just wondering if anyone knew of any programs, similar in structure to JET, that hired teachers to teach science. However, thank you for your advice. Any and all is welcome! |
