It seems that Guadalajara is becoming increasingly popular as a place to teach and that many teachers have found jobs there. Can I ask people where they have found jobs, how and were these arranged beforehand. I have just got back after teaching in Gdl and had to go private after having no luck with institutes. I had such a great time I'm planning to go back next year, so I am just interested in other people's experiences...Thanks and good luck all!

I'm not sure what you mean by "having no luck with institutes." You couldn't find any? You couldn't get interviews? You didn't find teaching in institutes productive and rewarding?

How long were you there? Most institutes throughout Mexico want a minimum 6-month commitment and many will only consider hiring teachers who are willing to stay for at least a year.

Thanks for the reply,

I found plenty of institutes and applied to about a dozen but received just one response and that was three months later. This did surprise me somewhat as I had 6 months experience teaching in Mexico and a BA...maybe they were looking for more qualifications.

I just wandered if any teachers had any advice about job-hunting in Guadalajara and if they knew of any good institutions in the area. Thanks again...

With most schools, timing is everything. You may not have had much of a response if you were job hunting in the middle of the school year or during the slower months. Places vary but the best times to look for a position are in August or January; that's when most schools are starting up their semesters.

Red Devil,
Did you try any of the chain language schools such as Berlitz or Harmon Hall ?

I did try those institutions and many others, but i think it might have been my lack of a tefl qualification and applying at the wrong time. Has anyone found work just with a degree and no tefl/celta?

In cities that have become popular places for TEFL job seekers, I think it's becoming more difficult for those folks without TEFL certificates and experience to find decent jobs due to the competition. The exception, as Scott alluded to, might be the chain schools, which require their own teacher training courses prior to working for them. However, it seems that those schools are now also getting an abundance of applicants in many locations.

A lot of the "luck" involved with finding jobs in Mexico is putting yourself in the right place at the right time. Be there and be available on a moment's notice. Continue making contact with the schools where you'd like to work, so that your application stays on the top of the pile on each DOS's desk or at least fresh in the DOS's mind. From what I've observed, most DOSs want/need to find someone fast when a position opens up. When there's an opening, the DOS takes the first acceptable application (from the most recent person he/she has heard from) and gives that person a call. If no answer, then on to the second application in the stack and so on.
