Just got a job with Geos for next year, just wondering if the price of suits is cheaper in Japan than it would be in the States? Or what about Hong Kong? And I'm talking about decent suits, something that might run me about $400 US. Anybody have an idea? thanks |

No, suits are expensive in Japan. Also, you have to remember that sizes run a bit on the small side here, so you might not be able to buy off the rack. |

I completely disagree with Celeste. If your body is not too large and you have someone to shop with or decent Japanese skills then Japan is a great place to buy suits. They are always on sale somewhere. The last suits I bought were 20,000 yen each from a brand name store. They were of equal quality to the $400 suits I bought in America and actually fit me better.
I'm 5' 9" and weigh 150 lbs. Being a bit bigger will not be a problem, but if you are over 6' 2" or have a broad build, it might be better to buy them in America. |

OKay- I see! I have only shopped for my husband who is a bit on the large size (though in Canada he seems average if devilishly handsome!). He is 6' 1" and about 190lbs. Hard to find any jackets or shirts that don't make him look like the incredible hulk getting angry. Also, he and some of our other male friends complain that the pants are a bit tight in the thighs. |

In Osaka, you can get order made suits for men, any size between 20,000 and 100,000 yen of excellent quality. |

How about Perfect Suit Factory? They've got stores all over Tokyo as well, I think.
I'm not quite sure how much the suits are, but I bought a very nice shirt and tie combination there for about 3000 yen |

I don't know much about Hong Kong, but I've read that Thailand is an excellent place for custom-tailored suits at reasonable prices. One of my old students was a flight attendant on a route that took her to Bangkok every two weeks. She brought me some travel brochures. There were actually more advertisement for tailors than there were for massage parlors. Combination packages seemed popular--packages like two suits, a sport coat, three shirts, two pairs of pants and three ties for something like $299.
By the way, I worked for GEOS. I found that nobody really checked on how often I was wearing my jacket. What I usually did was wear dress pants with a shirt and tie. I kept a plain black sport coat on the pipe hangar in the office. Whenever I heard that someone was coming from head office, I'd just throw it on. I never had any problems.
You could save yourself a couple bucks by buying a sport coat and a few pairs of pants that match well. |

If you're still in L.A. check out Burlington Coat Factory. There's usually a decent selection and you'd be surprised what you can find there. I don't know what part of L.A. you're in, but there are about 8 BCF stores in the area. I know there's one in Torrance, West Hills and Ontario Mills for sure. |
