Seemingly, the methods of choice here (other than the obvious and popular shaving option) are: "Soie" -- a shaver-like device made by Panasonic/National that "plucks" the hair out using rotating pincher-like things (ouch!)... Other companies (like Braun) put out a similar product but using the same principle. Otherwise, there's that stuff you see on TV infomercials every so often: Epil-stop. It seems to be sold literally everywhere, though the price is quite exorbitant and its effectiveness questionable.

OH you are talking about an epilator. That isn't that common here. I just know of it from a friend who ordered it off the internet.

I guess these Japanese women are lucky that they have such fine hair, there is no need to wax it off to last longer.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll just bring a whole bunch of it with me.

Dominique: Yeah! An epilator. That's it! Smile Well, in any event, they seem to be popular around here.

Chi-chi... Re: TMI -- maybe, but I've been to many onsens (hot springs)... In fact, during the winter it's a great time to go exploring new onsens in the area. Everyone is completely nude...... And though they are not usually co-ed, my wife confirms that the ladies are as "au natural" as the men are..... Wink Only a few people actually cover their naughty bits with a small towel. It seems people in onsens are not self-conscious whatsoever....

[quote="nawlinsgurl"]Hey ladies---especially easyasabc and denise:

Without running the risk of sounding like a vain girly girl who isn't interested in teaching, I have yet another "cosmetic" question.

I get my dark spots lasered and was wondering what the I guess maybe "social view" is in Japan on laser and cosmetic procedures. Is it like dental work-medevial?

Also I was wondering if anyone has experienced hair removal techniques in Japan. I usually get a wax and I am pretty sure they do it in Japan, but anyone know the rates or is it medieval also?
Hope that isn't too personal...

Hello nawlinsgurl, laser and all types of cosmetic surgery are big fads in Japan. I think it is sad that so many people want to change their looks by going under a knife or laser! Japan is one of the best places if not the best place for cosmetic surgery because so many people are having it down. If you do decide try to ask Japanese women if they know anyone! Eventually you will come across someone who knows an outstanding doctor. In fact you will probably be surprised how many women know outstanding doctors.

I'm sure...it's a lot like LA in that way...best looks that money can buy, and they even advertise it on tv. I would rather know what my child's facial features are going to look like...but to each his own, I guess.

I wonder how the teenage girls in Japan afford all that Prada....is it the dinner boy, the presents boy, or their old sugar man?

Hello Chi-chi,

To answer your question, Japanese girls who buy name brands products either have rich parants, rich boyfriends or work.

Perhaps you want to explain to the rest of us what "enjo kosai" is. It must be something if japanese have a word to describe it.

Its called compensated dating in English, by the way. Prostitution, by another name.

You see you just want to point out bad things about Japan and give the Japanese people bad reputation. I can prove that you prejudice and begot just by asking you few questions!
Do you know oldest profession is? Why don't you name one culture or country that has no prostitution? Okay, maybe the men in New Zealand prefer sheep but please name country with real culture!

I'm with PAULH on this one -- I don't see any troll bait here. Enjo kosai is an unfortunate part of Japan's "dark side" that no one will tell you about unless you've lived here for a while. Even then it's usually kind of taboo. If you want to learn more just do a google search for the term. Interesting stuff!

The article link was good -- the author definitely had some insight into the issue.

This is probably appropriate for another forum, but I wonder how many teachers working in the schools have had to deal with this issue 1st hand...

I once saw the price tag on a Louis Vuitton handbag and just about had a heart attack in my young age... Some of those things cost as much as my month's salary!

Im not trying to show the bad things about Japan, they already exist here and Japanese already know about it. I also know that most girls fathers (as they are the same age as me) are not rich or wealthy are saddled with housing loans and school fees and can not afford the things you are talking about.

1. Most Japanese parents are not rich that they buy 200,000 Hermes handbags for their daughters when then that is 2 weeks salary for mr salariman.

2. Ditto for the girl with the rich boyfriend. How many 20 year old guys do you know who are wealthy? University graduates i know start on about 180,000 yen a month, have very little money and the only guys with money are either yakusa or bar hosts.

3. Office ladies can afford it becuase they live at home, dont pay rent and their salary becomes 100% pocketmoney as they have no expenses.

So can you tell me how a 15 year old school girl can afford a 300,000 hermes and gucci bag or 50,000 yen a month phone bills?

Lovechild, Paul is hardly trolling.

I didn't know about enjo kosai until I had been in Japan about a year and a half. I don't know of other cultures where young school girls have sex with middle age men so they can buy designer products.

HS girls do not buy designer handbags by working p/t at Lawsons.

Smile Well... Some might! Letsee now. I saw a recent "arubaito" notice at the local fast food place last week... They were offereing about 850/hr I think.

Ok, let's take that... assume what, about 15 hrs a week (that's considered P/T in Canada)... multiply that by 4.... I get... 51,000 approx. (Gross). So to get that Hermes handbag, I'd have to save for about... 4 months... But that means I have no money left to go out with friends or to the movies or anything...... Oh, nevermind..... Wink

There is prostitution in virtually every country (except Muslim and arabic countries perhaps, where women get stoned to death for adultery) but Japan is one of the few countries where you get girls as young as 12 offering sexual favors, they can sell their underwear or school uniforms (there are shops for this in Tokyo) or even do business in their school uniforms. I found a link by the way, which showed the legal age of consent (where a girl is allowed to have sex) is 13 in Japan which means virtually any junior high school girl can legally sell her body or sexual favors for a price.

I would definately not count on finding your body sugar or any kind of home waxing/sugaring here. Maybe it's possible to find but defiantely NOT easy or common. Like I said before, I gave up trying to find it and had my mother send some. Confused

Late night TV sometimes have commercials for wax. You call a number and order it. Next time I see, I will write down number for you.
