Does Japan have an efficient subway and/or bus system?
What is the cost for a one way passage on the subway?
If not, i'm still keen to get around on foot..I highly doubt I'll be driving..

The public transportation system in my city (F ukuoka) is really good, but it isn't cheap. Subway tickets start at 200yen (for 2 stops) and go up to 290yen. Bus tickets star at 100- 160 yen (for 2-4 stops) and go up to 1000yen. If you buy a prepaid bus card or subway card, you can save from 5 to 12 percent on the fare. In general, if I am going a short distance I use my bicycle.

VERY efficent and 99% of the time, they are on time.
Costly tho...a short ride in Osaka will cost you 200Yen for a distance that you could easily walk or cycle.
Shinkansen tickets are pricey as well, but fast. A must do at least once.
JR lines are sometimes cheaper, but the trains are more often late by a couple of minutes and crowded at peak times.
You can by your monthy pass for anywhere from 5000Yen to .....Yen, depending on how far you live away from work or your most frequent destination.
In Osaka, you can get an all inclusive subway/bus pass for 15,000yen per month..make sure you use it otherwise it may be cheaper to buy individual tickets.
