Hi
Ive been considering a few job offers that I have and one company mentioned taxes of about 10-15%, whereas I was under the impression that taxes paid(for those with a work visa is around 5-7%). Here is the quote from the school.
"The taxes required of foreign workers in Japan are of two types. The main tax is the national tax which is taken directly out of the teacher's salary every month. This tax is usually less than 10% of the total salary for the month. The second tax is a residence tax, much like the state taxes paid in the U.S. Generally, the total amount of tax paid is about 10-15% of the total income."
Is this legit? Or is it too high?
Thanks, |

Yup, it's all legal. National taxes should be around 5-7%, unless you're on spectacular money. You also have to pay local taxes for wherever you live. These vary from municipality to municipality. I've seen people paying almost 20%, just as I've seen people paying 2%. It's all luck of the draw. You can phone the local town office and ask them what the rate is if you're wondering.
But, and this is a big but, you *don't* have to pay them in your first year of residence in any given municipal district. The taxes are always calculated on your previous years earnings AFAIK. In your first year they have no official figures to work from so you won't be charged that year. Some towns don't charge for the first two years. |

Not being charged for local citizen tax is in general true for the first year here as there it is based on your taxable income from the previous year.
As far as the schools taking out BOTH the country's tax AND citizen tax. I would be leary of that.. especially if it IS your first year. Some companies state that with regard to your local tax yet pocket the money back into the company the first year.
My recommendation is that you specify you do not want the citizen local tax deducted from your pay. If they say its impossible. Look elsewhere. A company cannot mandate the deduction of the local tax from your check.
I have never had my local taxes taken from my pay. I pay it seperately as I have deductions I do as well which drop my taxable income's total that are not affiliated with the company I work for. Infact they do not proccess my return either and they are more than happy to not have to deal with it . I of course get a year tax statement from them afterwhich I take it and my other paperwork and file it myself.
But if you dont have a japanase friend or spouse to assist with that then I'd not recommend going through the work of filing by yourself.
But with regards to paying your local tax its really easy to pay per month on it. |
