We do care about what goes on outside of our borders. (Is there any way I can hyperlink "borders" as I've seen done with words on some other threads?) That's why I posted the article.

When did we decide that Japan was a bad country? I'm just curious as to your reasoning. We never said that Japan was bad.
And yes, we are free. Laughing

Sorry about all the postings, but I don't know how to quote multiple people in just one posting. Sorry about that. It's partially why I'm taking a computer class, to better my skills.
Mike L, how do you think that this could influence things in the next election? How do you think this will influence things between America and Japan, not to mention with America in and of itself?

Maybe you misunderstood me! The chess game against the Russian champion was not played in Japan, I believe the game was played in Yugoslavia. I am not sure, I do not follow chess, I had read an article in the Japan Times a few months ago. The U.S. at the time of the chess match had a ban on traveling to that country and so that is why fisher is wanted.
This is one problem I have with being an American. Why does the government have the right to tell us where we can and can't go? The U.S. Government already makes it hard enough for Americans to travel and work abroad. Any of the common wealth nations have finding a job in another country so much easier than us Americans.
I really don't believe we are as free as American mainstream society wants us to believe. I am not even going to vote this year. And this will be the first presidential election I will not vote in since I turned 18 years old. I will never vote again until the U.S. changes the election laws. What is the point of voting? Gore won the popular vote! But what good does that do?
Anyway, Chi-chi, I hope not to offend you! This is just my belief! Maybe I am a little bitter about the U.S. for the war in Iraq. When Bush won the election and became president, I knew the U.S. was going to invade Iraq and this was way before 9-11.

It is a fact most Americans don't know nor care what goes on beyong the U.S. boarders. There is a joke that comes to mind.
What is someone called who can speak three languages? Trilingual!
What is someone called who can speak two languages? Bilingual
What is someone called who can speak one language? An American
I like learning new languages because I enjoy meeting people of different cultures.
Every time I go back to the states I am always amazed how little people know of events outside the U.S. of course there are the travelers, who are up to date on international events. Even online news sites like MSN and CNN every once in a while has an article about how ignorant Americans are of international events.
If you don't believe me start asking around. Questions like: who is the leader of North Korea? China? Japan? What country started to invade Tibet in 1950? When was Hong Kong given back to China?
More than anything, I want Americans to take more interest abroad. I think the U.S. would have a much better influance over the world if more Americans knew what was going on.

Hi chi-chi.

To multiple quote just type the [q uote="whoever"] bit, paste in the comment, then [/q uote] (it's easier if you have either already copied (Ctrl C) the quote to your notebook, or if you have two browser windows open, one of which you are logged into and use for your reply, one of which you are not logged into and use to copy your quotes and quoters names from.

eg

chi-chi wrote:
hello

hi chi-chi
bigbadbear wrote:
why you talking to my girlfriend?

err, politeness?
bigbadbear wrote:
why you say
chi-chi wrote:
hello
?

chi-chi wrote:
oh go away

...and so on...

(and always 'preview' before posting as it's very easy to miss out an " around the quotee or to miss an [/q uote] and then it all goes haywire).

Fisher didn't have a valid passport to travel on. It's still up in the air whether Jenkins was a traitor or was kidnapped. News is news. Who cares if it's beaten to death. The Hanshin Tigers, Yomiuri Giants, Bob Sapp and variety tv shows are covered to death. That's the way it is. If you were in the states right now, then you would be screaming that the elections and Iraq were getting too much coverage. If you think it's too much, just read or do something else. Pretty simple.

Easy to say, but what if you want some variety in the news for a change. Is that too much to ask?

I'm sure the election in America is being overplayed, but there are more than 7 channels to watch. I actually only get 2 channels clearly and 1 very fuzzy station. Terrible reception where I live now.

If it wasn't for the net, I wouldn't know if World War 3 hit. That is unless Japan sent their Boy Scouts, err I mean self-defence forces.

You could get satellite tv. I'm sure if you're starved for more variety, 25,000 yen for the dish and 6,000 a month won't break the bank.

News is news. When people stop caring or don't want to read/watch it anymore, it's old news. I just think it's silly that people think there's too much information about something.

Hi Gordon,
I had the same problem while in Japan, in addition to NOT having regular access to the internet.
If it weren't for the newspapers, I would have lost it. Fortunately it is easier to get papers in Japan than it is in Korea! Look for the Japan Times or the Daily Yomuiri, I know that they can be found at most train stations.

I did. I explained some information and gave an alternative along with my opinion. It wasn't a slam at Gordon. Just a difference in opinion.
