|
|
HI, would anyone be able to tell me what a reasonable going rate is for teaching in OZ? I have 5 years teaching experience in secondary school (german & maths, some junior level English) along with about 2.5 years experience in TEFL/TESOL. I'd like to know the hourly rates for both TEFL/TESOL teaching and supply teaching in secondary schools. I'll be on a working holiday visa and plan to start on Sydney (and go on to Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane). Cheers! |

Last I heard I think it was about 3 or 4 sheep an hour, give or take. |

I don't know about the supply teaching, but TEFL is about $30 an hour if you're on a casual wage. Take a look at the NEAS website, they should have a guide. Sorry, don't know the address, but a google should find it. Its a sliding scale based on qualifications and experience and has recently gone up (YAY!)
Good luck,
Lozwich. |

Oh my god! What am I doing here, working my guts out and earning a pittance???
I'm in Brisbane, working under the Queensland English Teacher's Award.
Thank goodness I'm not sticking around, otherwise I'd be heading straight down to Melbourne!

Actually, KCA, I wasn't being sarcastic at all. I lived in Melbourne for almost 20 years, and while the points you raised about it were valid, the idea of working less hours than I am now, with better conditions is very attractive indeed.
However, as I mentioned, I'm only here for a short working visit to sort out some personal business and save up a bit of money, so its nicer to be in the relative warmth of Brisbane I guess.
I had no idea that the wages varied so much. You'd think that with the high numbers of students coming to Brisbane the pay would be at a similar level, but perhaps there are other forces in play?
Have a good day,
Lozwich. |

$157/day for 4.5 teaching hours. But as an ET I was only getting $145 or $28/h.
Plus there's no work. I've spent months picking up small pieces of ET work before getting my own class.
The city rocks but.
P.S. I've lived here for years but just done my CELTA after teaching O/S for a year. |

Casual university lecturers here get around $120AUD an hour, but good luck finding a position. Even when you do find one, good luck navigating the melodrama of academic life - the appropriate buttocks must be kissed if you expect to stay there.
Unless you're British, Australian or a Kiwi then forget it - I suspect a north American would be laughed at if they suggested that they could teach English here in any capacity. It's not so long ago (well ok, 50 years or so) that lecturers at Australian universities were required to have a degree from either Oxford or Cambridge. |

You seem to be confusing Australia with NZ. Legal tender here includes beer, sex and Australian Pesos, although the latter won't buy much of the former. |

Yeah, but if you have just the right amount of the first, you're pretty much guaranteed a bit of the second... |
