In that vein, I never plan to go back to the States, never had. My home is where I make it and that is here for the time being.

Also, many employers don't like looking up references from abroad, partly due to language barrier concerns, partly due to the fact they can't independently verify that it isn't your best drinking buddy giving that reference.

Employers can never independantly verify that it isn't your best drinking buddy unless you work at a sufficiently high corporate level that the employer is listed as a executive in company web sites etc, unless you are going to a store in the same plaza and so the managers are all buddies, or unless it's a small industry where everybody already knows everybody else (in which case references aren't checked, because both potential employers and potential employees know that word gets around and even if it isn't your current employer who is called, you current employer would know by day's end, so regardless of whether or not you get the new job, you may be out of the old one).

I think it has more to do with the language barrier, the time difference (if you're North American, the employer would often have to call at 10pm in order to get anyone) and having to actually pay for an international call. Potential employers don't want to have to pay for an overseas phonecall to someone who may or may not speak English and who may or may not understand what a reference check is anyway just to check up on someone.

Can't they just use email to contact a former employer?

In case anyone was wondering, I did receive a TESL certificate back in June. I hope that's worth something Smile

Lajzar, you mentioned you never would go back home because you make 2.5 times more than your home country. Where is that? In Japan I made good money 450,000 yen after taxes at my peak. I was able to save a good amount of money there. Back her ein the states, I make 4,400 dollars a month before taxes teaching at an elementary school. In Japan I made more, but didnt get retirement or full health benefits for all family members. Are you making 750,00 yen a month?? Where are you teaching?
