u know, i've read a variety of postings on different sites and i cant believe the amount of negative people. everyone has a right to there opinion so why do others feel compelled to crash on someone else? i mean, theres a difference between stating your opinion in a curtious and polite manner and raving about how wrong someone is or how stupid or unqualified they are. i'm really sick of it. if u dont agree on a posting and feel the need to bash it, why not bite your tongue or at least be polite! my biggest pet peeve is those who judge others prematurely. generally, people are on theses types of sites for information or common interests, so please be respectful of others! and if you dont agree with someone, dont get all snooty and cranky, just move on to the next post. I guess i don't see why people can't be more open minded and respectful....it must be tiring being negative all the time!

Hear, hear! You got that righ, Canadian Girl. It's hard to imagine some of these folks are teachers, isn't it? Though, anyone who has spent any time in and around here can tell you that most foreigners you see are here because they couldn't hang where ever it is they came from and generally because nobody liked them.

While reading some of the posts on this forum I can't help but picture the foreigners I see from time to time, the ones who go out of their way to not notice you. It would be so nice to meet people.

Sweetsee, must you insult others in order to agree with the original post? I assure you that people back home do like me, and I am fully capable of functioning back there.

I have noticed (and gotten caught up in--ooops!) some negativity, too. It tends to go in cycles, and there are certain topics and types of posts that seem to elicit it. I don't believe that most posters go out of their way to be negative--I think most of the negative posts come as responses to perceived insults. Call me naive, but I think that underneath the occasional frustrations displayed on this board, most of us are decent, kind folks. We butt heads from time to time, but then we move on.

I think there are about a dozen or so people on this board who do attack and try to goad people into an argument. They seem to be a little more tactful than in the past so as to not get banned so quickly.

Hello Denise,

Who did I insult? And why so defensive?

Yes, what I said was stupid. It was my opinion. I wanted to say it, I said it, and now I regret it.

Fair enough?

I totally agree. I've been on other forums before ever since I got internet access when I was 16, & I've never seen so many stuck up ppl who's here to tell the world how better they are than everyone else. So what if I make grammar mistakes? So what if I make spelling mistakes? omg this is not a school, the net has its own lingo & it doesn't matter if ppl spell things wrong or has poor grammar, as long as they're here to share how they feel, then it's ok. I've once asked questions about something, but instead of getting an answer, I got posts complaining on my use of language, grammar or typos. Not helpful at all. However, I've seen other posts that are really helpful & I'm thankful for that.

And I'm really sick of ppl continuously quoting other ppl's posts & then biatch about it. I've been attacked so many times it's not even funny. I just didn't say anything back & either kindly apologize or move on to other posts. I'm not here to have an argument with other fellow teachers, why do they like picking up a fight? Very immature.

Does angry ppl has to do anything with age? If some ppl here taught Eng for like over 20 years, I can't imagine how old they are. Perhaps there are generation gaps in our communication. I'm not discriminating anyone, I'm cool with talking to anyone from anywhere & any age. I have friends who are either way younger or older than me. If you're wondering how old I am, I'm 24.

Some ppl are here to complain & rant, that's ok too. Everyone complains & not everyone has a good day. They might not even have a lot of ppl who they can share their frustrations to. Look, we all left home & came to Japan (some point in our lives). We have become the minorities. Shouldn't we at least try to help eachother (in a nice way) & be kind & gentle to eachother? If living here made you become a horrific person who loves attacking other foreigners, by all means go home (and stop quoting!).

Sorry if I sound harsh but I'm also sick of ppl attacking eachother on this forum. Thanks, canadian-girl, to point this out.

I'm hip!

This is my first forum. Are they all like this?

Maybe we can turn things around here. For starters let's all say who is their favorite poster and least favorite avatar. Incidentally, I only recently ever heard of this word. Can someone tell me the etemology? Sounds sinister. Reminds me of abbatoir. Hmmm...? Must be a relationship there.

Anyway, I'll go first. Guest of Japan and Gordon's. Sorry, mate. Must have something to do with our first meeting. Hmmm...yes, most definitely.

I like GJ because he never hassles anyone and has very intelligent things to say--without exception. When I see his name before reading a post I really look forward to it and the things he says and how he says it so cool. You're down, Bra!

Well, look at this part of your message...

I'd say you just insulted "most foreigners". Glad to see that you think it was stupid.

No, this is one of the best that I've seen. I've seen some better, many that are much worse. At least Dave Sperling created a Newbie section to try easing the instant flames that newbies attract when they post naive questions. So far, it has worked relatively well.

Come on Glenski. I said I made a mistake. I wanted to edit it out but I didn't. AND...I asked Denise.

Let me ask you this, did anything the previous poster said about quoting people have any effect on you? I mean, the whole idea of, so and so said this and so and so said that is really inane, isn't it Glenski? Do I have a point, well, of course it wasn't really my point but I wish I would have said it.

Glenski, you are very kind, patient, helpful and so many more things that I will, nor could not, ever know. I admire you, there you go. But, and this may be only directed at me, you sometimes need to, I don't know....you must know what I'm trying to say. I want to say you are number one, make me. Please!

Thank you for the kind words Sweetsee. They're unwarranted. This message board has lots of great writers and thinkers who go out of their way to lend a helping hand. Many of the great posters have remained constant while some have slipped away. Sometimes even with the best intentions life's frustrations can flow out of my finger tips and onto the the screen. I manage to catch most of my really grouchy or stupid posts before I hit enter, but sometimes I push the button anyway. Sometimes other posters say things that really hit a nerve or grate on my skin and only a defiant post in rebuttal or a dismissive post can restore my personal "wa".

See, just like I said.

I vote for you, mate. I'm serious. You have got to be one of these people that are so positive and so far out to be around. I was even thinking how sad it would be if I we did hang and I had to find out that you weren't on all the time. But I doubt that.

Do you know what I mean? I'm sure you have met people that give you that feeling, like you could never get tired of them and they were so inspiring and it made you feel better about yourself and everyone else?

I mean it, Guest. I need a friend like you.

CANADIAN GIRL

HOW DARE YOU ! YOU ONLY HAVE ONLY 9 POSTS TO YOUR NAME ! YOU HAVE ONLY LIVED IN JAPAN SINCE AUGUST THIS YEAR ! YOU ARE WRONG ! I HAVE LIVED IN JAPAN SINCE 1873 ! I KNOW ALL THINGS JAPAN..YOU KNOW NOTHING...I AM OVERLORD-SHOGUN-ASSASIN...I AM JAPAN KNOWLEDGE ! FEAR THE DURATION OF MY STAY IN JAPAN AND THE ACCUMULATION OF MY KNOWLEDGE ON THIS ISLAND THAT IS MY HOME !
=)

Cant say I havent hurled the occasional verbal handgrenade myself, but I reckon a lot of the antagonism comes from the "high horse"- edness and "holier that thou" responses posted by some...

ie "Ive been here longer, so I know best, shut up"

Yes experience, garners wisdom, but how many "Ive been doing this job for 20 years ! and I knows best !" Jonah's did you know in previous jobs ?

Fresh outlooks, fracas, disagreements, challenges, backdowns, posturing, revelation, informing, educating, belittling, praising...all good stuff I say...keeps the opinions pot boiling....

Know whats bad about opinions ? everybody has one....know whats good about em...? Your one is right, because your entitled to it.

ONLY MINE ARE THE TRUE OPINION THAT WILL SMITE YOURS IN THE RING !!!!! CLASHDOWN ! BRING THE PAIIIIN !
