It's a wonder you have any students at all. That and I pity the poor soul who works for you. Duh! |

Thanks for the kind words. I've got plenty of students thanks very much. Perhaps they appreciate the fact that I'll be around next year and the year after that........... |

Sorry about that Dave. I'm sure you do have students who like you.
I was out of order and didn't mean it. No hard feelings? |

Dave,
Don't be so quick to assume that the contracting BoE follows the contract. Er, um, one BoE I worked for didn't directly set up the part time work that I did, but had 'friends of friends' make the connections. I ended up teaching an eikaiwa sesion once a week for a handsome fee to spouses of the BoE people. I put it all together after I taught the first session and realized who they were.
You don't always know what you're looking at when you see people teaching/tutoring outside their supposed contract. |

round and round and round and round..this one doesnt look like anyone will ever agree...
Well how do you like these apples ?
Im an ALT, who has worked in eikaiwa, though Ive never had a private on moral, mutual exchange and educational grounds....Last week I was featured on Japanese national TV on NHK 1...because me and my headmaster at the school I work for thought it might be a good idea to teach the mothers of the children English...for free...I could have said no..but I did it (and Im doing it..its an ongoing thing)
NHK considered this newsworthy as it was purely on a volunteer basis and perhaps showed an escape from the "YOU WANT ENGLISH !? PAY ME CASH YOU NON ENGLISH SPEAKING PERSON !"
I teach from 8 till 3 with 1hr 30mins break and finish at 5, the 2hrs I have free is to prepare materials for the next days lessons...I did unpaid overtime and will continue to do so; to prep notes in English and Japanese and do the lessons.
I enjoy it alot and find it very rewarding despite monetary gain and recommend any other ALT's with spare time to pursue a similar activity, cutting out both greedy eikaiwas and greedy freelancers... |

Kovac,
What is your definition of a greedy freelancer?
3,000yen/hr? 5,000 yen/hr? Anything/hr? |

Are you some kind of missionary or something trying to spread the word through free English lessons in your free time to wealthy Japanese houswives?
Or are you just an amuzing troll?
Either way, reading your last few posts has been great for a big laugh thanks! Please keep it comin' buddy!

Since you teach for free, I guess you had little to lose in your bet or do you not teach for free at your ALT job too. Why not? You are a human tape recorder are you not? |

Kovac, that sounds good, congratulations.
Other professions do the same. Lawyers do pro bono work, doctors volunteer in clinics, so why not teachers?
At the same time, there is no need to disparage those who seek compensation for their time. There is nothing immoral about charging a fair price for a valuable service. If you would rather be a professional skin flute player than a paid teacher, that is entirely up to you. Me, I enjoy the little extras my 12 man of private classes brings me each month.
To each his/her own. |
