Would the Chinese authorities let me in, or would I be turned back?

Been asked before. Yes it's fine.

Some advice. Have the name of a hotel to write on the Entry card-even if you have no reservation-doesn't matter. And say you are sightseeing if they even ask.

I have had less trouble entering China than Korea.

Thank you very much. I am going to have a Z-Visa when I enter Shanghai, would you still advise me to say this?

No problem with a Z visa and a one way ticket.

If you are staying in a hotel you MUST register at the local police your address (ie the hotel). You have to do this within 48 hours.

Go to reception and get the form (check out this website http://www.visainchina.com/visa2.htm ) and have them stamp it. Get them to tell you where the local police station and then go there for temporary registration.

I didn't do this and got an official warning but thankfully no fine.

I came in - from Texas, too - with a Z visa and a one-way. No problems at all. Maybe this was wrong, but I put down the address of my school as my address on the entry card. (I do live on-campus.) You have to register with the PSB, but every time I've stayed at a hotel, the hotel clerk filled out the temporary residence form. I assume they filed it...

This, by the way, is something that will happen even after you get your residence book. I live in Zhengzhou, so when I travel to Pingdingshan or Kunming or Beijing and stay at a hotel, they still fill out the temporary resident form. Come to think of it, they do it even when I stay in a hotel in Zhengzhou.

With a Z visa even less to worry about...Honestly I had never heard of this register with the police when in a hotel business. Are you sure the hotel's don't do all this. And if you have 48 hours I guess 2-night stays wouldn't count.

Anyway...I'll pretend I didn't hear that. Wink

No worries at all in Shanghai.
They do not want to see your ticket merely check the visa number/ passport etc.

Any address will do, but as suggested the (approximate) address of the school is good too.

If you stay in a hotel, they register your stay with the PSB and your school will do the same for you

BTW: I have rented privately for long periods of time and never registered with PSB.
Illegal but who cares? - in Shanghai at least.

Definitely not the case in the backwoods.

In anticipation of your next question, here is my preemptive answer:
Yes, yes, yes - so long as Teggsass is a recognised member of the UNO.

Does it entertain diplomatic rapport with the PR of C?

On the 28th August this year I was stopped from boarding the plane at the Brisbane Airport (Australia) because I only had a ONE WAY ticket and a Tourist Visa. They forced me to buy a ticket out of China prior to the Visa expiry date.

I must admit that it was probably due to the fact that I was flying with Royal Brunei as I have known other Australians who came here on a one way ticket with no problems.

I have ro go to Shanghai today actually to change the date of the flight to Hong Kong (the ticket which I was forced to buy) or cash it in.

So, just in case, make sure you have money with you at the Airport. The ticket from Shanghai to Hong Kong was only $300 Australian.

I came in on a tourist visa, from San Francisco. I was advised that, for my peace on mind with my one-way ticket, I could make a reservation for a hotel in Thailand. I did so for the cost of ten dollars. Never had to show the confirmation, but it was nice to have something to say in case someone asked me.

I did not have any problems with a one way ticket. Probably it is fine. You can always say you thought it would be cheaper to buy your return ticket from China.

Different question, isn't it?

So Texas_Gaijin to confirm what everyone on this thread says, you will have no problems with the Chinese authorities.
Rhonda Place's issue was in leaving Aust. NOT entering PRC
