I am living in Japan, but I am thinking of taking a job in Taipei next year. Can anyone make a comparison between Taipei and Tokyo? Which city has the better night life. Which city has more recreational activities such has health clubs? |

Don't come to Taipei, because if you do you will be sorry! The women don't save their legs, and the older women like to complain! The kids are rude and spoiled rotten little brats. I have lived and worked Tokyo, Seoul and now Taipei. I am counting the day until my contract ends and I have half a year to go. This place is almost as bad as Korea. Japan is the best place of all of Asia and maybe the world to live and teach! |

If you are looking purely at night life I think Tokyo is probably the best. I think life in Taipei is probably easier, more relaxed. Its a shorts and T-shirt kind of place. I moved from Kobe in Japan to Taipei and I enjoyed Taiwan a lot more although its not as aestetically pleasing as Japan.
Night life isn't / wasn't a big thing for me so I'm no expert.

Stay in Japan! The women here are such perverts! On numerous occasions some woman has rubbed her bottom against me, or grabbed me in a spot, well you know where!
I am not gay, I just believe in having all my misery come from one person my wife! I am not interested in cheating on her, you can say I am a miserable married man.
The last time a woman rubbed her bottom against me, I was on train that was not so crowded I stepped back to make some space between us, and she stepped back and continued. I wanted to say something, but the language barrier and the thought of everyone thinking I was gay stopped me from confronting her. When the train stopped, I got off and waited for the next train and so was late to work.
I have also been grabbed while stepping off and onto a train. Usually the woman is going in the other direction. I teach adults three nights a week in each class there is a woman who flerts with me. I can't wait for my contract to end, then I am going back to Japan!!!!!!!! |

You think having chosen the "handle" Big John Stud, he would like the attention.
I've never been lucky enough to have a Taiwanese woman rub herself on me in a train. Maybe I should change my name. |

I wasn't thinking, I chose the name, because my favorite pro wrestler had the name, and I thought it was funny!
About me having issues! I am married with three kids. I work all the time, and my free time I spend with my children. Life is difficult right now. The last thing I need is another woman!
This is a woman's world! A husband who cheats on his wife is doomed! Look what happened to Clinton! A regular person would have a much worse fate.
I think the secrete with Taiwanese women is not be interested and then they come on to you! The more I resest the more they come on. Many times, I have to take cold showers. |

Night life in Tokyo has to be better than in Taipei. On the other hand you're more likely to be able to afford it...! I like the relaxed atmosphere of Taiwan and I can save more here. I agree with the other poster, Taiwan is not as aesthetically pleasing as Japan, IMO. This is as far as the ramshackle sidewalks, proliferation of scooters as well as the fashion sense of people are concerned. On the other hand the landscape is breathtaking, and not as densely populated. There's people, but you can also get away from them.
If someone accosts you, just tell them off in English. They always know they've done wrong so the language barrier isn't a problem. I've done this in many countries and it's never failed. Don't worry that other people might think you're gay. There's nothing wrong with being gay, but you might want to reconsider your priorities. Being gay is not bad, but putting up with harassment for fear of other people's (stranger's!) opinions is harmful to you. See, it's still bothering you a bit.
As for his handle suggesting he wants that kind of attention, we've seen this argument before. Some argue that women wearing miniskirts and no panties are "asking for" or want sexual attention; even if their advances are rebuffed. Her clothes give permission for unwanted sexual attention. This stance is as nonsensical as saying an online name means someone wants sexual attention from anyone and everyone. |

If you don't mind the cold winters, Japan by a long shot. I wouldn't recommend Tokyo. Find a medium sized city to help lower the cost of living. You could actually make some money and not have to live in a shoe box with three room mates.
Good luck,
A.

Thanks for the advice! I am wondering why Japan by a long shot. Also what are the students like in Taiwan? I have taught in Korea and all over Japan. Most Korean children are spoiled rotten, rude, cry babies who always try to portray themselves as victims and Japanese children are kind, polite and courteous. What are Taiwan children like? |

The Children are a mix between Korea and Japan but it is really hard to generalize because every individual is different.
Japan is a real country with genuine culture and identity. Here on Taiwan many of the worst aspects of Chinese culture have been forced upon the local population for over three generations.
If you have already done Japan perhaps Taiwan might be a welcomed change of pace. Here on Taiwan nothing is simple or easy and the rules change on a daily basis, unlike Japan where most things haven't significantly changed for hundreds of years.
For me the Japanese culture was an attempt at perfection where Taiwanese culture is an attempt at imperfection.
Good luck,
A. |

From what you said I would agree with Aristotle. You'll get brats, but mostly the kids are fairly well behaved, but of course that is down to the teacher too.

That quote I'm having a little difficulty understanding. The majority of the population is Chinese and they didn't have any other culture forced upon them other than a goverment trying to form a Taiwanese identity. Even with that pressure the Chinese of Taiwan did not suffer a Great Leap Forward or a Cultural Revolution. There maybe a Japanese influence (for obviously reasons) which I did notice , but otherwise Taiwan Chinese culture is the real thing. It maybe imperfect from your perspective, but it is most definitely Chinese culture.
I speak from the perspective of someone who has lived in China, Japan and Taiwan. |
