Dear forum,

I am living and teaching in China and need some info on visas and schools.

1. First, is it possible to get a residency visa if the contract you have with a school is for part-time work? I think the answer is yes, right?

2. And secondly, is it possible to go to school part-time (i.e. Xiamen University) in China and obtain a residency visa? I have heard it's difficult to get in a school as a part-time student, unless the person were to study at some smaller language school.

Thanks very very much...... Surprised

D

Completely wrong, my friend!

You must get a fulltime job to qualify for a work visa and a residence permit1

And studying means you have to apply an approved subject that foreign nationals can study. If you study in CHina LEGALLY, you must stay at their foreign students dorm. You will be holder of a student's card.

Part-time jobs are not legal, strictly speaking; if you do find work paid for by the hour you are a lucky man but you must be careful. You certainly can't legally rent a flat or a room. Xiamen is a little more "open-minded" though I don't know if the SARS crisis is alerting authorities to roaming foreigners in search of accommodation!

I have relatives in Xiamen and they tell me that neighborhood committees are actively looking for people without legal permits. After all, SARS is a foreigners disease. It started in Philidelphia. Some Chinese friends where very solemly telling me this a couple of days ago.

Owen,

what does that mean, "without legal permits?" I hear it's a 500rmb charge per day if your caught illegally residing, working, or whatever in China.

So no one knows how I can go to school part-time or work-part-time?

?????????????????????????????????????
