A Newbie Forum would be much better than death. |

Strange - so far no one seems to prefer death. Well, there's just no accounting for taste, is there?
Regards,
John
P.S. R - have you ever considered a career in polling? You have a certain facility for framing questions is a pro-active and non-biased way. |

A Newbie forum sounds like a great idea, but who would be giving advice to whom?
And if Dave did make one, wouldn't we need some wierd initiation rituals to let them in to the grizzled old gieser forum? |

I'm not thinking of a completely separate forum requiring a seperate logon, etc., just a sub-forum next to the General Discussion one. People would obviously be free to go to and from that on to the other threads, but at least they would know that the Newbie section would be a safe haven for beginner questions. The friendlier of the regular posters could lurk in there and dispense advice as and when they felt like it. Likewise, newbie's could still post country specific questions, eg 'where can I get a donner kebab in Tokyo?' in the country threads, while posting 'what's a TEFL? Is it better than a CELTA or a NATO?' in the Newbie thread.
to put it another way, (after all that), a General Discussion forum for newbies. |

That said, I do feel a certain tingle at the thought of wierd initiation rituals!
John - living in the United "voter apathy" Kingdom, I felt I should, er, help the voters along a bit. |

I like your idea but will the powers that be go for it?
Hmmn.I think we need a comment from god, aka Dave. |

Once again you speak the truth, Ben. How do we summon Dave? does it require naked dancing round a bonfire? The drinking of goat's blood? Ritual ingestion of Space Dust? Or just shouting "hey, Dave!" a lot? |

Dave is the alpha and the omega, the first and the last.
If we wierdly initiate enoguh newbies, that ought to do the trick.
Seriously, lots of the forums do seem to contain a "Newbie with partail high school seeks really good job in Middle East" type posts (okay, not that bad). That might rise some bile. In a newbie forum, we would at least know to EXPECT that. And therefore the responses might not summon Dave's archangles (known the world over as Mon Nee Tors.)
Now to summon Dave. Let's see, paddle, goat, shaving cream.... |

As my cold gets worse, death sounds like a very attractive option...but, in the interest of the greater good, I'll vote for instituting a separate newbie forum as well. Maybe that will cut down on the abuse and keep the most common questions in a place where newbies can easily find them rather than hunting through the ever-growing General Discussion forum.
Summoning Dave requires, I think, a sacrificial virgin...where the heck are we going to find one of those? Or we could just pm Sperling and the mods (sounds like a new grunge band). |

Sperling and the Mods... I'd buy their records! Possibly...
Sorry to hear about your cold. They're nasty things, very under-rated. Can you get Lemsip in Hawaii? When I have a cold, Lemsip's the only friend I care about.
I should be writing ad copy...
I'll PM Dave and supplicate.
Rob. |

Your sympathies are much appreciated, Rob. Yes, colds are underrated: I'm not well enough to get anything done that I'd planned for today yet I'm not sick enough to be really interesting to my roommates. They've offered me some, uh, interesting smelling concoctions that they picked up in Chinatown--very kind of them, but I'll stick with the Nyquil. Haven't heard of Lemsip or seen it here but your glowing testimonial has me sold on it already.
Thanks for PMing the powers that be. It's a good idea and I'm sure they'll go for it, but I suspect that some harsh old-timers will miss pummeling the poor newbies--not that they'd admit it. |
