...has anyone of you heard of/had experiences with an organisation named "JGWB" (with a contact person named "Cherry") in Beijing recruiting for a short summer term in Urumqi?
Their ad was on the thatsbeijing website:
"JGWB is looking for English teachers during this summer vacation in Xinjiang Uygor Autounomous Region. (Working time : From July 5th to 25th),Only Native English speakers are accepted . We offer reasonable rates of pay and Free accormodation, Free transportation fares, food and Free travels in Western China --Xinjiang"
I asked for more information, which I received (in a very general format), but there were a few points that got me:
"The teaching location will be in the areas around the Capital city, Urumqi." --> Sounds like some traveling there!
"Attention Plz: As the consume rate is not high in Xinjiang , and this activity is non-profit , so the salary could not be so high as teaching in Beijing. " --> Non-profit in China, does that exist?
"Before we sign the final formal contract , you are required to have a test-teaching during June 10th to July 1st .one chance of test-teaching . and then we will decide whether you are qualified according to the result of the test-teaching . (the listeners of the test-teaching are some professors)" --> a test teaching phase of about three weeks for an actual teaching assignment of ten days? a teast teaching in the first place (I just sent out another email asking whether this "test teaching" will actually be paid)?
What do you guys think? |

Run, run, run away. They get you for free for 3 weeks! For 3 weeks paid? Don't expect the test-teaching to be paid. Even if you are told it is, you are not under "formal contract". How about one day of test teaching? And 6 weeks paid.

I have seen Urumqi listed as the most isolated major city in the world. You had better be sure you are with a legitimate outfit before you go there! Once you are in Urumqi they can do about as they like with you. |

And, another angle to ponder:
Your work visa will NOT be valid for teaching in URUMQI, not even in Huairou or Zhangjiakou! In other woreds - if you do "pass" that funny three-week trial period, you will be going to Xinjiang illegally.
How about housing? Probably a good old dorm in the Hongqi Hotel for backpackers!
I would only ask this outfit one question:
"Can I get a photocopy of your business licence?" |
