I was told by an agency that South Africans have undesirably strong accents - like the Irish apparently. Are there any South Africans reading this forum? Have you experienced difficulty of this nature?

That's the spirit!

I hereby formally welcome you to us happy throng in the land of the falling yen.

You're going to love it here and - and what is far, far more important, - you're gonna get right up the noses of the the brown-nosin' career-sh ites (although of course that is difficult to achieve and still to come out smellin of roses, or of anything else for that matter except for the aforementioned brown-stuff).

But hey! Who cares!

Good luck and ... Welcome!

How goes it? South African here Very Happy Former Cape Townian.
First time I hear of the accent thing though. I've often been told I have an easy to understand accent because its quite flat compared to the bubblegum American or incomprehensible English/Scottish.
Maybe if you're from the platteland or the Cape Flats might there be a problem understanding the accent ekse. Catch tjy mei drift melaanie?

ACTUALLY, the South African accent sounds extremely similar to the Queens English - Standard London accent to my American ear. Just steer clear of any slang/jargon used only in South Africa and I bet you'll be alright.
